❓What do advisors expect to see for assignments?

Hi all! Ben from the LMS team here, and we're looking for your input.

We're working to make the advisor experience more consistent when it comes to looking at students' assignments.

For folks who are advisors or work with advisors, it would be great to know:

  • When you view an assignment, assessment, or discussion would you expect to see:
    • All students' work and grades, even if they aren't my advisees
    • Just my advisees' work and grades

Thanks so much!

  • Ben -

Though advisors might WANT to see everyone's grades, as the academic dean for our institution, I do not believe that is appropriate. If an advisor needs more specifics about an assignment, the advisor can check with the teacher.

I thought we already had the ability to manage this via the Gradebook setting > Grade access - All School Advisors setting. Am I misunderstanding what "All School Advisors" means? Or would the new adjustment be more granular in that the advisor would only be able to see all grades for the courses in which an an advisee is currently enrolled?

  • Thanks, Scott – appreciate this input! To clarify, this is separate from grade access, and just a question of when an Advisor clicks the link to an advisee's assignment, what they see.

  • I think it depends on the size of the institution and the set up of the advisory structure. We should be able to have the option to grant access as we can with the grade book and report cards.

  • Thanks, Bernadette!

I have to agree with Scott. We give our teachers fair amount of autonomy (to an extent) to decide when and how their grades are shared. Would this new change be, in effect, neutralizing the All School Advisor role and treating all advisor access the same? It would potentially be nice to have a Dean role that had more inclusive Advisor access, but at least on our end, we rely heavily on that distinction between Advisor and All School Advisor.
