Gender Code Values

Is there a way to add Nonbinary to the Gender Code values in the OOB field for gender? I'm sure I'm not the first one over here.

  • Hi Moshin, we encountered the exact same problem when implementing Blackbaud CRM. It is possible via a customisation from Blackbaud but we felt that this functionality should be provided OOB and therefore didn't pursue it.

If you haven't seen it on the Ideas page there is an idea to update the gender codes that you can vote on - Update Default Gender Codes | Ideas for Blackbaud CRM and BBIS (aha.io).

Our interim solution was to default all gender values to unknown and then create a new gender attribute which contains all the values we want. We then added this attribute to the ‘Personal Information’ form (see below). We hid the original gender field when viewing an individual but a user would see both fields when adding or editing individuals.

Not ideal but this was something we were able to do ourselves as an interim solution in the hope that Blackbaud provides an appropriate solution in the near future.

  • Just popping in to encourage others to vote on the idea bank entry that Matthew mentioned. This is long overdue. There is no reason Blackbaud can't convert the Gender field over to a code table like most other fields.

As a higher ed, we have need of at least capturing nonbinary, but I know other orgs will need more than this. The nonbinary director of our campus LGBTQ center was pretty offended by “Other” and “Unknown” as the only options.

We also wiped out the table that assumes gender based on first name. We no longer *assume* based on first name or on any gendered relationships the person may have in the system.

  • Happily in a recent product update they mentioned that this was one of the idea bank ideas which was going to be actioned.
