How to split a recurring gift in NXT
Hello, Thanks in advance for your help. We recently automated our recurring gifts! Whew! This is amazing.
However we are running into one issue. We have a donor who would like her card to be charged just one time each month and her gift divided between three funds. (We do not use the split gifts feature.) Previously in Batch after the EFT files were generated, we were able to add two lines to the Batch and update the gift amounts and funds to account for her preference. After the batch was committed all three gifts showed as Recurring Gift-Pay Cash.
Have you run into this? Support has not be able to offer any suggestions. I am not sure how to do this in NXT. I tried copying the gift in the NXT Batch, but when I select that the gift type is recurring gift-pay cash, I am prompted for credit card information. I also cannot adjust the amount on the original gift in the NXT Batch. The box is grayed out.
Any ideas?

We don't use automated recurring gifts in NXT ourselves yet, but is it possible to update the recurring gift record to have the split gift? I know it's there if you're creating a new recurring gift as this was something we wondered about when we looked into it.

We do not use split gifts either. The only workaround I can think of is to enter three separate Recurring Gift pledges onto the record, each with its own associated fund. The only drawback is that the donor will have 3 unique charges on her card each month. Hopefully, since it is just one donor, and she herself has requested the split designations, it should be an easy phonecall to explain how you are accommodating her request.

Personally, I don't think it is possible to automate the recurring gifts in the scenario you described without using split gifts. We also automated all of our recurring gifts in NXT (which is so much easier than our previous process) but it also means that we have to live with a certain amount of split gifts. Luckily, these are pretty few and all fall under the same Campaign just different funds. This type of split doesn't have a huge impact on our reporting and we have set up our process to account for these. For us, it is worth living with a few split gifts in order to have the automation that NXT allows.

@Carrie Aranda you say it is “worth living with just a few split gifts” for the automation. However, once you set a policy in place, what will you do if the dollar value grows? Recurring gifts are a program that will only continue to grow as more donors embrace online giving. Our program has grown exponentially the past 5 years.
We used to “live with” split gifts. But then when we began our capital campaign, we discovered that the process just didn't lend well to reporting with larger campaign gift amounts. We have since scrubbed all our split gifts in favor of multiple pledge/recurring gift entries.

@Rachel, yes, we have used splits on recurring gifts in db view. Split is entered just like a split for a pledge. Have not attempted yet in web view.

Thanks, Faith. We may have to go back to the donor as you suggested.

@Faith Murray, we have made some very calculated decisions about “living with” split gifts. We only allow split gifts for recurring gifts within a narrow range and is simply for ease of use for our donors to set up their recurring gifts online through NXT. These all exist within a single campaign (Annual Giving) and within a single Gift Subtype (Individual) and are all within a single use case (tax credits). In our state (AZ), there are two state tax credits that donors can claim when they donate to our organization. One is very generic and the other is very specific and must be designated. We promote our Annual Giving campaign around these tax credits for our low to mid-range donors who primarily give online. This does not in any way effect our reporting of gifts since our main reporting features are campaign and gift sub-type. So, in order to better encourage donors to become monthly donors, as well as give them an easy way to give online, we are living with this type of split gift. The key is knowing how it will effect your reporting and how you are allowing donors to use the automation. In our case, the impact to reporting is low but the value to donors is extremely high.

For sure there are issues surrounding using Split Gifts and the headaches that causes for reporting. However, to answer your original question @Jamie Monk you can split a recurring gift in NXT. Locate the recurring gift record for the constituent, click on Amend Gift Amount, and then set up the Split Gift accordingly.

Hope this helps!

Hi, we also don't use automated recurring gifts yet (but hope to soon!), but we do avoid using the split gifts feature as well. For your situation, I wondered what would be more time consuming – living with split gifts for that recurring gift and the subsequent consequences to reporting, or going into the gift after it is committed and making adjustments directly in the donor's record to three separate gift records. If the full amount is charged, it is just a matter of how it reflects in your database, which is always changeable. That would be a monthly task and takes away from the beauty of automation, but it would effectively avoid the split gifts reporting issues. Might be six of one, half a dozen of another though, but just thought I'd throw it out as an idea.
