Applying soft credits to constituents

We have members in our organization that pay dues but also they give a donation beyond their dues. Some of the members have children who also are members, therefore the parents will pay for their children's membership dues and donations. I know the member (parent) paying for the dues or donation is the hard credit, but how do recognize the children so they are published in our bi-monthly newsletter?

  • If the children have constituent records you can give them soft credit for the gift. I would only soft credited them for their portion of the dues though.

If they don't have their own constituent records, you'll need to come up with another solution such as an attribute on the parent record or something along those lines.

Welcome to the BB Community forums, @Debra Watson.

Are you using the Membership module? Hopefully another user of that module can respond but doesn't it have some way of recording whose memberships the person is paying for? I'm thinking along the lines of the Event module which I have used that will list registered and guests.

Then the question becomes was all the functionality included so you can pull a list of those children. :) Just thinking….

Debra, I would personally separate the function of who is paying vs. who is the member. All your members should either have a membership record (if you have that module) or have a constituent code with a beginning/end date. So, you would post the gift to the parents, then assign the children their membership/constituent code, and pull from that field for your publication. Adding an end date on the constituency/membership will also make it easier to pull lists of lapsing members. Good luck!
