Tracking Fiscal Year

I'm curious how other people use RE to track the fiscal year a gift is directed towards. We occasionally have people who will send a gift on one date, but would like it directed towards the expenses of a particular fiscal year that has passed or is in the future. We keep track of this by using campaigns: we have a campaign for each fiscal year.
But this seems to not be how others use campaigns. I see them often with names more like “Extend a hand” or “BOLD Productions," which seems much more useful for reporting. But that raises the question of how others keep track of fiscal year, particularly in cases where a donor's gift date not might fall within the fiscal year the money was directed towards.

    We have this issue every year. We have a couple of major donors who give their annual gift in Feb. for the current calendar year, but we have to apply it to the next fiscal year. We date all of our campaigns per fiscal year. So for instance - this years campaign is : 22-23 Annual Fund. We create the campaigns several years in advance in preparation for donors like this. You will get a pop up when committing the donation that it does not fall within the donation year range. Just say OK. You need to check with your business office to make sure this fits with their accounting too.
