Setting up a system to take payments directly over the phone (without donors reading out their card details)

We are about to start a telethon campaign and would like to set up a system whereby we take donations from callers by directly keying in their card details to their phone. I'm told this is a DTMF line and that because we have a Stripe account we should be able to do this?

    Thanks for your post. This is an interesting use case - can you share any more details on any existing hardware/software that you plan on using to facilitate this workflow?

    BBMS does not have native support for accepting DTMF payments. Once you have decoded the card details, it's feasible that you can use the Payments API to process those cards. The Payments API itself will not interpret the DTMF signals.

    I have seen similar use cases where the point to point encryption device from BlueFin is used to enter card details - this still requires cardholders to read out their card number, however the details are entered into the BlueFin device by the call agent to provide additional PCI security.

  • @Mina Mistry as far as I know this is something we do through the Stripe payments? It may be the case that I've misunderstood how we access Stripe Payments. Noone here seems to really know how to access it. Is it something we access through Blackbaud, or do we get in touch with them directly?

    It looks like this documentation is published by Buffalo (I assume this is the 3rd party you are working with) and they have provided these instructions to set up a direct connection with Stripe.

    BBMS and the Payments API does not support this functionality and we do not have any overlap with this documentation. I'm afraid this isn't something I can help with and my recommendation is to contact someone at Buffalo (or RNL?) directly.

  • @Mina Mistry thank you for this. I have been in contact with them and apparently what they need is the login details for the Stripe account. We can't find the info here (it's very likely been lost over multiple handovers), are we able to get/reset the login info through Blackbaud?

    Hi Douglas - I don't believe this integration is related to Blackbaud or your BBMS account. It sounds like you have a Stripe account that is separate from BBMS and so I'd contact Stripe to get access to that account.
