Portal

I'm sure I'm not the only one excited about the release of the Portal feature in NXT, for donors to manage their own contact info/recurring gifts. For those of you who may have already begun rolling it out to donors, how has it been received? Any best practices you've devised?

Please post here so we can learn from your experiences!

  • @Faith Murray I'm not going to be able to roll this out to donors until the receipt amount is included in the giving history. We have donors who purchase tickets to events with a $0 receipt amount and this would give them the impression that their gifts are fully tax deductible.

@Brandon Stein, that's a really good point. Could you roll it out without granting access to giving history?

We have gifts like that, too, including annuities and in-kind gifts posted as $0. I thought we could at least use the recurring gift management feature and roll it out just to our monthly donors.

I doubt we would ever release the portal to our entire universe of donors anyhow … only the ones we know well like major and monthly donors. I was thinking about the donor login process, which only requires a name and email address for access. What if we did an email append and got the wrong email address on someone by mistake? (As has happened!) What if Bill Jones has been receiving emails intended for Bubba Jones and uses the email invitation link to gain access to Bubba's giving and contact info? We're planning to discuss the strengths and weaknesses and make a rollout plan that guarantees best security for our donors, even if it means a smaller universe of Portal users.

  • @Faith Murray most of our donors give by Direct Debit (UK) so those gifts do not appear which just makes it confusing for the donor. We would like the ability for them to view bank details and possibly amend them. Also no option for changing contact consent which we would really love donors to have control of.
