I implore Blackbaud to postpone turning off the database view Tables features until summer 2024.

@Deb Dressely Job Assignments, like Campaign and Fund, are record-based and aren't tied to tables. You can search and modify those from Records. In the General tab of the Job record, the only table-based fields are Category (Job Category table) and Volunteer Type (same table name), both of which are available in web view tables to modify.

@Faith Murray I am in full agreement with everything you've expressed Faith.

@Austen Brown Good idea to speak to our Account Managers about this issue, but Blackbaud got rid of our Account Managers in Australia more than 6 months ago - we dont have them anymore!

@Noel Freitas After reading these posts and replies yesterday, I did my own testing of the RE NXT web view table cleanup. My steps:
- randomly chose the Action Notepad Types table with a specific table entry.
- exported ids from ‘View Uses’ of the specific table entry
- added the Action System Record Ids into a db view action query using ‘one of’
- viewed about 10 actions in the action query results
- none of them had the specific Action Notepad Type I had chosen.
I chatted with BB support and the answer: I can confirm that not all of the System Record IDs that are being exported will be able to be queried upon in database view….However this is a caveat of this new feature. Not all types of table entries can be identified with those IDs.
Is that experience common to others? Or did I miss something?0 -
@Deb Dressely, I reached out to Support to try to clarify (it took a few days of back and forth). She confirmed, as we knew, that the Job Assignments no longer show up in the db-view and webview listings because they are not true tables (despite what the KB article said). I asked if the tables would continue to be editable from the constituent record, and received this reply: “I was not able to find any upcoming changes on that part.” Hopefully that means that your current work process will continue to be unchanged for the time being.

I'm going to respond with something that is probably going to be unpopular, but here goes: I don't think this is going to be a huge issue, given the way that I have been cleaning table entries forever.
Database view Configuration never gave us the ability to see which records were using table entries. Whenever I do cleanup, I do a Query and proceed from there. We can still Query which records use which table entries, and we can still do a global change / delete.
Did Blackbaud try to add functionality that is useful and fail? Absolutely. Allowing users to view a list of records using a table is a GREAT idea. But it completely fell apart in implementing it. Frankly, they should have done it right and added it later rather than roll it out now in such a useless way.Did Blackbaud remove functionality? No. They are moving it to webview, and it seems that you can do everything in webview that you could do in database view.
I honestly might have missed something, and I'm sure everyone will let me know if they think I did! But I've thought a lot about this and have yet to come up with a problem that is worth my attention and arguments. There will be a slight change to how I clean tables - I'll delete or consolidate in webview vs. database view - but it seems so insignificant. If this dramatically changes your ability to manage tables, I am interested in hearing how.

@Karen Diener I've finally taken Friday afternoon to catch up on some updates, including this one. I've just tested some very light table cleanup with some old action notepad types in webview, while also have DB view open on another screen to compare.
I will say that, overall, the same functionality seems to exist as is in database view, so I'm inclined to agree with your overall assessment that there doesn't appear to be a loss of functionality at a glance. I was able delete a action notepad type that must have been entered in error at some point, but never used (cll- typo for call would be my guess) with no issues. I was also able to use the cleanup feature to replace an action type that was used twice with another action type, and delete the original one in the process. For the system record ID, my understanding after having reviewed some of these comments and having tried to query on the system record IDs that appear under the “view uses” is that the system record ID in the webview tables does not correspond to anything that can queried on (namely the constituent system record ID in DB view). Maybe I am misunderstanding, but this seems to be contradictory to the explanation in the August 8 “What's New” update about tables which states “Next, select View uses from the menu next to the entry's name in the table entries list. If any records include the entry, a list of system IDs for each record type appears. In the database view, from Query, you can use the system IDs to search for and update the records as necessary.”
Since it appears we can't actually search using the system ID, it does put me a put more on guard about this change- again, while not a loss of functionality compared to before, it seems to contradict some of the earlier messaging, and makes me a bit wary about what other issues or unintended hiccups might lay hidden beneath the surface in this change. (There's also a chance I've gotten some of this system record ID piece entirely wrong in my Friday experiments, in which case I'd love to be proved wrong- if there was a way to know exactly which records had it via that system ID, that would move the needle to calling this an improvement in my opinion.)4 -
@Karen Diener
As unpopular as you believe your reply is, I share your same view.It is hard to deal with change, same for all regular user of RE NXT as well as manager/admin of RE NXT.
As some has pointed out and Karen's post, Webview functionality is equal to DBview functionality with the exception of being able to print a report of all tables and its values. I think Blackbaud can easily add this, and hope they do so they can remove the need to go into DBview to get this report. (From SKY API, if you have anyone familiar with SKY API, can follow this post:https://community.blackbaud.com/forums/viewtopic/586/65025)
Now, let's talk about the issue many are pointing out: system record id (WARNING LONG POST BELOW and is more “involve” than a regular admin of RE would know about, requires knowledge of RE database table schema).
first of all, the “view uses” functionality is NEW feature on webview only, something that dbview never had. So the disabling of dbview table management feature and “view uses” feature is unrelated.
I will use an easier to understand example: Constituent Codes
When you use the “view uses” feature on one of the Constituent Codes table entry, it gives you how many “record” is using this entry and the system record id that is using this entry. The system record id is correct, except NOT in the way one would understand it normally. It is NOT the system record id of the constituent record that uses this table entry. It is the constituent code system record id of the constituent code record. This is the Schema for constituent code table:

What the “view uses” gives you is “ID” (circled in red), the system record id of the specific constituent code record. What you would LIKE to get is “CONSTIT_ID” (circled in blue), the system record id of the constituent record.
So Blackbaud programmer/engineer isn't exactly “wrong” here, but they failed to realize the system record id of a constituent code record (or address record, or action record, etc) is completely useless to end-user having no “real” way to “locate” the record (constituent) that the “sub”-record (constituent code record is a “sub-record” of constituent record).
I think Blackbaud's intention is good here, filling a hole that the dbview's table management have, which is trying to find what record is still using the table entry. They need to rethink which system record id to show/export so that it is useful for enduser.
Another issue, the export button can ONLY export up to 5000 records only, something else to fix on Blackbaud's end.
I hope my post provide a objective breakdown of the issue here, I hope to not have offended anyone, as it is not my intention.

@Alex Wong and @Jaclyn Whitelock thanks for your insights and responses! I completely agree that the ideas of “loss” and “change” and “we're taking something away from you” are probably what people are reacting to more than the actual changes themselves.
My organization is doing more and more work with the connector, and agree that what is being done by developers is of very little use to end users. There definitely seems to be a continued lack of understanding at Blackbaud about what end users truly need.
I'll be able to continue my currently style of table cleanup with minimal disruption. Identify the table that needs to be cleaned, do a query for records with the value to be cleaned, and do a global change to remove the value. Then delete in webview instead of database view. That's it.
To me, the ability to change the order of the entries by dragging and dropping them is the biggest improvement.

I can't agree more on this.
Blackbaud does need to “look at things” in the client point of view, and one way to do so is to “act” as a client, and write instruction ON the modal pop up screen where system record id is shown on how to USE the system records id. If they had done that, they will quickly realize that the system records id is useless to client.

@Alex Wong, how nicely explained! That makes complete sense.
I am looking forward to doing more things in webview, and I think BB has been adding some definite improvements in their processes. For example, I'm delighted at the creation of Portal, where donors can update their own gift info, and I like how email marketing in webview also provides more consent options than in OLX. I'm just waiting for the bugs to be worked out so we can actually use the features, and I like having the option to wait rather than things being “turned off” suddenly in database view without a chance for much transitional testing, as they are doing here with Tables. And they need to add table export functions, webview backups, etc so we can “own” our data better.
But I don't think your take is “unpopular” at all; and overall, as others have said, it seems like work processes won't change much for this particular feature.
