Address/Household Designation

Does anyone care to share their logic for deciding whether to check the Household box on the address for a family? I am interested in automating this if possible. Thanks.

  • @Jennifer Welch I do it for the sole reason of being able to tell people who ask how many households we have in a matter of seconds.

  • @Boyd Reilly By # of households, you mean if parents are divorced and/or remarried?

  • @Boyd Reilly thanks but I was asking not why but how?

  • @Coco Parham Suppose we are doing a school wide mailing. I can give them a number right away.

If there are 3 kids in one household that counts as one. 3 kids in a divorced household would count as two. Then there are also boarders who make up one household, but each of them also belongs to another household.

  • @Jennifer Welch Core - Users - Household & Address List. Set filter - Select All and press Make Household.

  • @Jennifer Welch I was actually just beginning the project of realigning our families into households. We try very hard to make sure the community feels included in the school through mailings and outreach. If my predecessors had decided to click the household box when they were making families, I would be able to provide a list quickly that can be used as both a document of reference for others or files that can be used with mail merge and other programs.

Curious how this works; I tried to group a couple of test users into households; these users had the same address (but were not in any household)

When selected the system created two brand new household id's and assigned a unique one to each account instead of assigning them the same household id#

  • @John Bozek It sounds like the addresses were separate. The address needs to be shared. So, what you want to do is delete the address of one of the users. On the user you deleted the address, add an address and use the address of the other user (assuming the records are related it will pop up as an option).

    Hope that makes sense.

  • @Boyd Reilly unfortunately most of my database has non shared addresses if i'm understanding correctly you are saying to remove an address from one person entirely and go through the contact card to manually share the address with the other users?

  • @John Bozek Yes. Makes it easier long term. You don't want to change the address for multiple people if one family moves.

This older thread has some similar discussion in it too, which might also interest you.

and this has some info about the differences between them

  • @Bryna Gleich et. al. thanks to everyone for this discussion. I have worked with shared addresses and Households before at my previous school. In my current job we are implementing Blackbaud for our SIS and I was tasked with looking into creating Households. What I am hearing is that shared addresses are important in keeping address changes in sync and that Households are important in getting a count of number of addresses for a physical mailing. I'm not sure we need Households but do need shared addresses. Am I missing anything?
