March 2024 Monthly Challenge: Inspiration Station!
For the month of March, we are sharing sources of inspiration. You can share who made a big impact on you, inspired you, or helped you in your life or career. It could be an author, a panelist, or a great presentation or session you attended. It can be a book you've read, a podcast you've listened to, or a book you've read. Whatever inspires you! Share it in this thread and you'll receive March's exclusive badge!

@Crystal Bruce
From an early age, David Attenborough has inspired me to look after the natural world, and encouraged my love of nature and wildlife. It's the reason I work for a conservation organisation ?5 -
@Crystal Bruce
My parents have inspired me towards faith and family. My faith--specifically my faith leaders--have inspired me to be a better person. My kids inspire me to be a better father and to set a good example for them to follow. The people we serve at my organization inspire me to work diligently to serve them better. Inspiration is all around me, it's just a matter of leaning into it and using it as motivation to bless others around me.10 -
@Crystal Bruce - My inspiration, and my giftings, come from God. I can look back and see how each job, each season of my life has prepared me for this job. I also know, and have done so often, that when I don't know what to do or where a problem is, He shows me and helps me. I can't imagine life without Him (though I remember it!)

@Crystal Bruce I cannot pinpoint any one thing. It's been an ongoing process of life, I think. I am blessed with my faith, which keeps growing. It certainly got me through my most recent unexpected job change. I definitely look to my husband of 25 years for strength and encouragement. My four kiddos have definitely also helped push me to be a better person.

@Crystal Bruce My faith in God, knowing the battle is the Lord's, and the comfort the Holy Spirit provides get me through each day and hour. My parents, husband and family have been anchors of support and encouragement.

As others have said, faith and family. But working at a nonprofit is an uplifting experience itself. Years ago, my husband worked as a counselor at a prison. I always said we got to see opposite elements of human nature in our jobs. Being at a nonprofit where the donors and people you work with care passionately about helping others, all giving selflessly to make the world a better place, helps you believe in the goodness of mankind and wake up with purpose every morning. But I also want to share a quote from one of my favorite poets, Helen Steiner Rice:
Helen Steiner Rice's
10 Commandments1. Thou shalt be happy
2. Thou shalt use thy talents to make others glad.
3. Thou shalt rise above defeat and trouble.
4. Thou shalt look upon each day as a new day.
5. Thou shalt always do thy best and leave the rest to God.
6. Thou shalt not waste thy time and energy in useless worry.
7. Thou shalt look only on the bright side of life.
8. Thou shalt not be afraid of tomorrow.
9. Thou shalt have a kind word and a kind deed for everyone.
10. Thou shalt say each morning -- I am a child of God and nothing can hurt me.

@Crystal Bruce When I listen to music it gives me inspiration. When I listen to the instruments, vocals, they lift me up. I feel almost invincible. Also talking with Family and Friends gives me inspiration. Hearing about their days and what challenges they have faced and how they dealt with them, makes me aware of my purpose. Knowing my purpose brings me inspiration.

Like Miki, I don't think I can pinpoint any one particular thing. I will say that my parents have both been great examples to follow. My Mum was a nurse before she retired and a care home manager at one point and is able to very straightforwardly and fearlessly cut straight to what needs to be done regardless of whether it is nice/palatable or not, particularly useful in her profession when it comes to someone's health. She's very good at telling people difficult things.
My Dad was always helpful to people where he could be - there were a number of times that he would stop to help someone whose car had broken down by the side of the road and he must have done countless odd-jobs for friends and family in his lifetime. I've heard from various people, unprompted, about acts of charity that he quietly did without telling anyone - I bumped into the priest that married my parents (by this time my Dad has passed away) and he told me about when my Dad got his first work Christmas bonus as a very young man. My Dad gave his bonus to this priest and asked that it be given to a family in need at the time so they could celebrate Christmas, which it was. A few years later, when the lady who had received the gift was in a better position, she came back to the priest and did the same thing - paying forward what she had received.
So yeah, my parents have been an inspiration.

@Crystal Bruce It is so uplifting to read about these sources of inspiration. ? I would say for me it’s my family, friends, and colleagues that provide me with a sense of strength and who encourage me.

@Crystal Bruce in terms of professional inspiration, i love the APRA Podcast. really insightful!

@Crystal Bruce I'm inspired by my coworkers. and by my former bosses who took so much time and patience in training me.

@Crystal Bruce as a teenager I was inspired by the story of Alan Rabinowitz, who became a great ecologist after overcoming verbal communication challenges. I was fortunate to meet him in college. The space and relative quiet of the pandemic allowed me to think and reflect on my career path, and provided the opportunity to shift to my current position and trajectory, which is a much better fit! I'm humbled by the passion and dedication of my fellow independent school colleagues and peers.

@Crystal Bruce Wow Crystal what a thoughtful question - thank you. I know a lot of us are inspired by family, friends, and co-workers, but I want to answer by saying lately, I have been inspiring myself. I am so proud of myself for truly understanding I must take care of myself first with the understanding that it's not a selfish act. Two years ago, my family and I experienced a horrific attack. After the attack, I realized I wasn't myself and needed to seek therapy. While taking care of everyone around me, I didn't realize I was in need. I am inspired by my determination to not give up and not be ashamed of going to therapy. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. So, to this wonderful Blackbaud community, “Take time today to love yourself, YOU deserve it.”

@Crystal Bruce I was introduced to this piece by a PEO Sorority Sister. I have since framed it and have it on my desk, and turned it into a greeting card and use for most every occasion.
Desiderata: Original TextThis is the original text from the book where Desiderata was first published.
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

@Crystal Bruce Wow lots of great entries already. When I read your question the first person that came to mind was the late Maxwell Gubin. He was my boss in college. He was in his 80s and a database wizard. I learned so much from him. Also John Harrington my boss at my first non-profit charity organization - learned so much from him and he gave the spiritual blessing at my wedding reception. Bring it up to present day - I'm so grateful to my family, this community the NNE RE User Group, my bbcon community - @Dan Snyder I'm looking at you, especially today ?.
And you Crystal our heart and soul of this community!

@Elizabeth Johnson I could also say you as you introduced me to the BB Community several years ago when I attended my first NNE RE User Group meeting which was and is full of great people.
I should also call out @Heather McLean for getting me started on my automation journey and always encouraging me to share or refine an idea. @Ben Lambert for sharing his knowledge in a way a non-developer can understand. My boss @Sara White for just letting me roam free in my process imagination (or reigning me in when needed ?). I also have a friend, Zach, who is not a BB user, but showed me how to record macros years ago and I think that was a huge turning point in the beginning of my automation obsession.

@Crystal Bruce, reading through these posts was inspiring – and made me think of those who have influenced me. Aside from my family and my faith, which have been noted by many already, my teachers played a supportive and inspiring role throughout my life. I didn't always have a stable home life, so many of my teachers stepped in and encouraged me. I formed lifelong relationships with some of them — before social media made it easier to get in touch with them. As one example, my third grade teacher, who was a Franciscan sister, and I corresponded by letter until her death in 2015 (she was 97!), and I would visit with her whenever I was back in my Iowa hometown.

@Crystal Bruce - I recently finished HBR's Top 10 must reads on managing yourself. The one about “Who's Got the Monkey” was my favorite and has totally changed the way my closest colleagues work together and communicate about projects. Harvard Biz always inspires.

@Crystal Bruce, We have a time at the end of every staff meeting, which is once a month, where we share something positive that has happened in our lives. Sometimes it is just that we made it to work after a very difficult morning or time at home. Sometimes it is the future homeowners we work with or some kind act someone has done for us. Our future homeowners are always an inspiration as they are working hard to make the homeownership dream come true. Habitat homeownership is almost another job. And the way they juggle their children's schedules, their own jobs, and maybe even their own school time as well as the demands of our program show us what hard work can do for a person's life, spirit and soul. And they also do so much for those around them.

@Crystal Bruce Be motivated inspires me. My kids are my biggest motivators everything I do, I do for them to make their life better.

@Crystal Bruce for me it is the neighbors that we get to support every day as well as the volunteers that support them as well as us! It really takes a village to do what we do! It lifts my heart to see the community coming out to support each other.

@Crystal Bruce I am inspired by my first boss, Dante Mattioni, at my first position at a nonprofit organization.

@Crystal Bruce My biggest inspiration has always been my big brother, George DiBello! Outside of family, a big source of inspiration for me is Rotary International. Rotarians come together to be of service in their communities and around the world. I joined my local club in 2016 and continue to be inspired every day by the amazing good being done by Rotary and similar service organizations! ?

@Crystal Bruce I am continually inspired by all the many people who have gone before me and done the hard work to build foundations on which I travel, work, live, thrive, and lay another layer for those beyond me. From my great grandmother who was the first female student to run her college newspaper and yearbook, to everyone working and fighting today for Womxn, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other minoritized people. May each of us go from strength to strength.

@Crystal Bruce It's easy to get overwhelmed by the little details and occasional monotony that comes with being on the data side of fundraising, or lose sight of meaning when you're working in the background and not the frontlines. That said, I'm always reinspired and reinvigorated when we receive a donation made in honor of one of our employees for going above and beyond, or when a program we've worked so hard to get funding for has a tangible impact on the people in our care. It reminds me of how important it is to work through any roadblocks or frustrations and that what I'm doing has a real impact beyond my desk and the database.

@Crystal Bruce what inspires me is my yoga instructor's calm and generous spirit. Even when is overwhelmed with running her own business she still makes time for all her yoga “students”. She always has a smile and love in her heart for all. I try to emulate that caring and loving nature when I am having a tough or stressful day.
