What'cha Up To? (Feb '24)

What's everyone been up to?

Reading: I just ordered two bucket-list books, so it's a tossup between which to start first - IQ84 by Haruki Murakami or House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Watching: Saw a zany movie last night called Thanksgiving. It's on Netflix.

Listening: All over the place musically, but I'll shout out a fun podcast - The Big Flop is excellent, with a great host and guests.

@Bobby Steurer Cool - will definitely check out the podcast! Thanks! :) Always looking for tips on Netflix shows!

  • @Irene Hui It's a fun pod and, nicely, safe for work. ;-)

  • @Bobby Steurer my 2024 goals are to engage only with things that tickle my brain or make it smile in my free time, and to not be afraid to walk away from whatever that activity is if it doesn't ⭐

Reading: Started Rough Sleepers by Tracy Kidder. True story of a doctor who cares for Boston's unhoused medical needs. I love reading stories of people who live to change the world. Puts me in my happy place - and he is a fantastic nonfiction author.

Watching: Just finished All Creatures Great & Small (grew up with the books, then the first TV series, now the reboot) so next is Reacher - because they're so similar right? ?

Listening: Blame it on the Fame on Wondery. It's the story of Milli Vanilli - kind of like a “Behind the Music” for the podcast era.

@Spring Velazquez As someone who supports and volunteers with organizations that support unhoused folks in the Boston area I'm looking forward to checking out Rough Sleepers. Thanks for sharing!

Also, I loved the All Creatures Great & Small books. I'll look into the reboot!

@Bobby Steurer I'm reading Tom Lake by Ann Prachett. The audiobook is narrated by Meryl Streep and she does such an amazing job with it. Lots of local references to places in New Hampshire including Camp Huckins which is down the street from Camp Calumet where I am a staff alumni and family camp participant.

I've also started using Kanopy which is a streaming service through the library and am watching Wallander which stars Kenneth Branagh. It is excellent!

  • @Carlene Johnson ACGS reboot is what your soul needs! And so far Rough Sleepers meets all my criteria

  • @Spring Velazquez The next episode of The Big Flop (pod I mentioned below) is actually going to cover Milli Vanilli. I'll have to check out Blame it on the Fame. I believe both pods are on the same Wondery network.

  • @Bobby Steurer I love this thread! Please continue it every month. I get so many great suggestions!

Reading: Pirate Hunters by Robert Kurson

Watching: Twitch streams, mostly. I watch a couple of streamers that play the game I play!

Listening: Stuff They Don't Want You to Know podcast

  • @Bobby Steurer
Reading: The First Four Years, by Laura Ingalls. I've read the rest of the series, but never the very last book. I'm going to pre-read it for my bookworm daughter so I can answer any questions she has about it.

Watching: classic oldie chick flicks, While You Were Sleeping with Sandra Bullock and Just Like Heaven with Reese Witherspoon. I've also made it a mission to introduce my kiddos to all my oldie favorites, so we'll be watching Joe Vs the Volcano and the first Pirates of the Caribbean next. I'm also eagerly awaiting the release of the second Dune in theaters this year.

When Netflix gave up the ghost on DVD rentals, I switched to an alternate one called Cafe DVD. A little pricier than Netflix and slower delivery time, but a must-have for watching all those oldies if you don't want to subscribe to 20 streaming services.

Listening: Um… more oldies? I'm revisiting some bands I haven't heard in years, like ABBA and A-Ha.

Playing: So I'm adding a new category here. ? My husband, kids, and I are all playing Sundaria together on Steam. It's a four-player dungeon-slashing medieval fantasy game that just released last year.

  • @Faith Murray
    Immediately looking up Sundaria. :-)

  • @Crystal Bruce oooh that's a great podcast!

@Bobby Steurer I started Swedish classes, studying for my Extra Class ham radio license and am preparing for Big Night, a citizen science project for protecting vernal pools! Not really reading much except my ham radio Extra Class study guide and my Swedish textbook!

  • @Amy Barker, that sounds like exciting stuff - kudos to you! I have to ask, why did you pick Swedish, and please enlighten us what vernal pools are!

@Bobby Steurer Love this, but I'm still watching the same shows as last month. In my defense, there are over 20 seasons of Midsommer Murders and each episode is about 2 hours long, so I'm going to be on that series for a long time!

  • @Amy Barker You're the second person I've heard recently who is getting their ham radio license. I feel like I need to take a peek into this world!

Always looking for podcast recommendations…excited to check this one out.
I can't bring myself to watch Thanksgiving LOL
My sisters, mom, and I just finished “reading” (some of us listened) to “The Women," which was just released at the beginning of February. It is an incredible book about the brave women who enlisted to serve as nurses during the Vietnam War. I highly recommend it….but be warned, it is a fairly graphic depiction, especially in Part One.

@Faith Murray my family is Swedish. My grandmother and great-grandmother moved here when my grandmother was 4.
Vernal pools are special pools that form in the spring and are super important for salamanders, frogs, etc. They dry up in the summer, but from about March 15-May 15 are hoppin'! (Pun intended) Very important breeding grounds for several endangered critters, and many common ones.

@Bobby Steurer yes, I have my Technician and General license, and am studying for the Extra Class. Highest level with the most access to all the bands. :)

  • @Amy Barker That's awesome! Congrats! I'm always curious - what do you guys talk about over the bands? Is it like a big ol' forum for anything? I guess I could look this up myself but it's not every day you meet someone who's Extra freakin' Class!

    @Bobby Steurer,

Reading: I'm participating in a Decades reading challenge this year, so February's read was a book set in the 1900s/1910s. I chose The Lions of New York, and it's been a good read - set in 1913-14 and 1993.

Watching: I'm not much of a watcher

Listening: Terrible, Thanks for Asking podcast by Nora McInerny

  • @Christine Robertson I am a total sucker for british murder mysteries! I'm currently working through Grantchester.

  • @Christine Robertson I think I'm on 2 or 3…Audrey is married…I am a sporadic watcher with months in between depending on how hectic the rest of my life is?
