NXT Rollout Plans?

Does anyone have a formal NXT rollout project plan they are willing to share? I'm curious to know if anyone has scoped out an “implementation” type plan that would help this newbie RE user be thoughtful around testing, training, etc. as we head toward December 2025!

@Cara Valentine Are you already using RE NXT or are you in the implementation process and migrating your data into RE NXT between now and December 2025?

  • @Christine Robertson thanks for the response. We are already in RE NXT and have mapped our data — I'm more looking for strategies/plans as it relates to new functionality testing and training as part of the web rollout. Sorry for the confusion.

@Cara Valentine - I recommend you follow PSG's on-going webinar series where we'll cover the new features in WV. We recently hosted a webinar on WV Queries - you can check out the on-demand recording here:

@Cara Valentine I think it's really hard to plan that too specifically as we only have so much information about what the release plans are on the Blackbaud side.

  • @Austen Brown thank Austen! This is already on my radar, still hoping some of my peers might have developed a timelined plan as it relates to testing and training that I could model/steal ideas from!

@Hallie Guiseppe - any thoughts on this?

  • @Christine Robertson hearing this helps me immensely. I come from the world of technical project management so, if I am being honest, I'm struggling a little bit with the lack of information and timelines being disclosed. I'm also feeling uncertain on what functionality, if any, will be going away, This makes me uneasy as someone who likes to have a strategy/plan for all things technical.

Any other advice you can offer?

Hi @Cara Valentine, and thanks for the tag, @Austen Brown.

Cara, this is actually a topic I’m considering for a BBCON proposal in Philadelphia this year, so I’d love to hear more about where your organization currently stands in its RENXT implementation. Understanding your experience and challenges would be incredibly valuable as I draft my proposal to ensure it resonates with the audience.

When I started at Alvernia, they had been using RENXT for about 18 months but were primarily utilizing actions with little else. I developed a plan to maximize RENXT’s capabilities, and I’d be happy to share the documentation I created for that process. Feel free to DM me your email address, and we can connect directly!

@Cara Valentine Make sure you attend the product update briefings and check the updates list every time you log in. I'm totally with you in that I'd like to know what's coming and when to expect changes, but we're usually finding out a bit as we go these days.

@Cara Valentine Also - I don't expect that December 2025 will be the end of database view (I've never seen anything official to that end). I also anticipate that RE NXT will continue to develop and change beyond that time as well.

While Blackbuad has a general plan for webview development (shown usually through PUB and BBCON), it is not a strict timeline, there's really no “prepping” for change. When change happens, Blackbaud usually will have webinar series and training.

As for training in general, it really depends on if you are from RE going into RE NXT or something else going into RE NXT:

if you originally was RE, now going into RE NXT, then it should be more easy as the concept of how data are stored is already known. You can slowly introduce webview functionality to your staff. We went from RE to RE NXT, so our plan was:

    • CRM staff (i.e. dbm, dba) go in and try everything on webview, determine what is good, what is not so good, and what is bad
    • Hold a meeting with power user of org and expose them to the findings
    • let the power user go and play with webview especially around the specific roles and responsibilities in each of their own area
    • hold a org wide meeting for all RE NXT users and show them webview
      • constituent record, the moveable tiles, editing, etc
      • gift record
      • fundraiser work center
      • List (constituent list and new mapping feature, gift list, opporunity and action list)
      • look at some of the default dashboard (if they are meaning when crm staff and power user investigated/determined)
      • event management

Long ago, Blackbaud used to offer this as a service through in-house consultants. Today, I think folks are relying more on peers and industry thought leaders to get them through such a big change. And when it comes to change management, starting is the hardest part - where do you begin, with such a big change?

I always preferred to get adoption moving in the right direction by looking at job role, rather than function within the web view. Functionality changes, but core job responsibilities don't, typically. That means dividing out your end users by role (e.g. MGOs, annual fund, gift processing, executives, grant writers, etc.) and going through an open-minded discovery process to understand exactly how they intersect with Raiser's Edge now in database view, document those intersections, and then determine whether and how their work can improve using the RENXT web view. And improve is a subjective word, so look for how to make the case for adoption around any definition that's realistic. Can they do their work faster? More efficiently? With better visibility into workstreams? How will your organization leverage this technology to ultimately raise more money to serve your mission?

From there, you can apply change management principles to move folks to where you want them to be in the future. This could include Blackbaud training, customized training by you or a consultant, changes to views/Dashboards to optimize their experience, and any manner of carrots and sticks to get folks bought in to the vision of elevated fundraising. Make sure you celebrate little victories along the way to keep morale up.

  • @Cara Valentine, for us, full webview implementation centers around waiting for Batch to be fully operational. BB has communicated that they plan to enable database-view-type functions in webview Batch. When that happens, our rollout will formerly begin in earnest.

Of course, BB doesn't have a hard and fast rollout date. And, they seem to be in the habit of doing partial rollouts, where most but not all functionality is available. That being said, I have determined that webview is finally functional enough to begin a slow and easy transition. Our general plan for 2025 is this:

    Happening Now:

    • We are beginning to implement Events in webview, but only on back end processing. We use webview registrations that don't require payment, but all payment processing still occurs in db-view and OLX until webview Batch becomes functional.
    • We are currently beta-testing recurring gifts and the Portal in webview with a small handful of employee and former employee donors.
    • We are testing our more basic query functions in webview, allowing our staff to become comfortable with that process. (Not all query fields are yet functional.)

Once webview Batch is improved and Batch reports are enabled (but no sooner than summer, our slow season):

    • We will transition the rest of our recurring gifts and event work to webview.
    • We will switch from OLX donation forms to NXT webview forms.
    • We will test all gift processing in webview.

Once queries obtain Address Processing functionality, and better Export options are enabled:

    • We will test transferring mailing list activities more fully into webview.
    • We will test audit/financial reporting usage in webview.
    • We will more fully transition prospect management processes into webview.
    • Gift acknowledgement and printed pledge reminders can likely begin to switch over.

Of course, Config work, Admin controls, Appeal/Fund records, and Reports will simply have to be tested out as they are released.

  • @Christine Robertson Good Lord I hope they do not yank it from us in December - would be the worst time of year to cut off db view. I doubt that will happen, since there are still so many vital things that we cannot do in web view. We've been “gearing” up for this for 10 years. I can't add an appeal in web view, or do the batch processing we need, or adjust a gift, so I doubt if I can't do that now, though we have had NXT for 10 years, it won't be ready by December.

@Rose Dixon There has been no official communication about an end date and BB has always given notice of such things well in advance. There is a rumor that database view will be gone in December 2025, but I think that is a misunderstanding of the actual announcement that the goal is for webview to be fully functional by that time. Webview being fully functional does not mean database view will immediately be removed.

  • @Christine Robertson, I agree. The roadmap provided by BB was for “full” functionality by Dec 2025, but last I saw, that roadmap only went as far as Global Add and did not include Import. Without a fully functional Import mechanism, database view cannot be eliminated, even if certain functionalities are closed out.

As far as advance notice, I'm going to say that BB gave our Finance Office several months of functionality before sunsetting Financial edge “database view". Several months is not a huge amount of time, and there were still bugs being worked out and missing modules that had to be third-partied, but it wasn't an overnight rug pull as some people seem to worry about. As long as users are proactive in testing out the new webview features, I think they'll be well prepared.
