Examples about Segments (Transactions Codes, Projects, Class)

Hello FENXT Community,

We are new with Blackbaud at ALL, while we do training I am putting together all the different segments we need in order to have an accounting system that will work based on our needs and clients (Board, Donors, Head of School, etc.). Can any of you give me an example of what you have used in your schools? Example: Project: Athletics, What would be the name for one tier down to name all the different athletics areas? Thank you!

We currently use transaction codes to separate the “tiers”. However, it is very hard to do reporting to separate the tiers. For example if you do a project activity report it will only show athletics combined totals and not separate by sport/area. We have found a work around by exporting the data into excel and pivoting the data to produce reports, but this is not the most ideal situation. I currently just asked the same type of question to the group to see if there is a better way.

  • I have the same question. Can anyone from Blackbaud offer any recommendations?

Within our FE NXT instance we have a two tier system of custom field coding for our projects. The first is a school/agency code of "Athletics" then we have a second tier code called Department. An example of this is "Football" or "Baskeball (M)" or "Basketball (W)" We also have a purpose code and a restriction code. Examples of purpose code would be "Current Use - Scholarship" or Current Use - Unrestricted Program" or "Endowment - Scholarship". Examples of restriction code are "Student Support" or "Program Support" or "Capital Projects" This way we can use all of these code to filter reporting. Plus we also use the project type assigned to filter for reporting.
