Is there a way to move an online donation to program/class registration?

There are not great options in this scenario. You can change the designation of the donation to one you have set aside for earned revenue, and then you can apply an adjustable discount and comp them for the registration. You could refund the donation to a dummy payment method, then “pay” for the class using that payment method. Sort of depends on what your Finance team might like.

I don't believe you can do that refund trick here. I don't think credit card payments in Altru can be refunded to anything other than the original card. The reason for this is fraud prevention (so a user isn't refunding a donation over to their personal credit card, or something like that).

I think your only options are to leave it as a donation or to refund and recharge. I've experienced similar situations at my org. I think we might choose to leave it as a donation and not inconvenience the patron/donor. Our reasoning would be that creating a great visitor experience would outweigh the issue with the funds going to the wrong bucket. But that might depend on how much the fee is (since you mentioned it being a monthly class).

Yes, not ideal, but that is what we do. “Refund” the order for the donation to change refund method to a payment method we created under "Other Method", “Revenue Adjustment”. Then we create an order for the program registration using the same payment method of “Other”, "Revenue adjustment". Messy, but it works. You just have to take the refund of the order for the donation into consideration when summarizing giving.
