attendance by period

In attendance setup, I have chosen to record my attendance by periods, not days. I have received many, many parent questions about "incorrect" attendance reporting because the attendance numbers that the parents are seeing are by period (see screenshot below for a student who missed 2 days of school) and they don't follow the detail link. Could there be a way to show days (as I do on report cards) instead of periods absent in the Progress attendance summary without changing my setup?

  • We had to create Homerooms for this.  Our faculty take attendance by period with the first period of the day taking the "Homeroom" attendance.  After using the products for a year we now only have 4 Homerooms (instead of one for each 1st period class)  Faculty now take their normal class period attendance and from there our Attendance Manager notes in the Homerooms who is absent and that pulls into what parents can see as well as report cards.  We make the Homerooms the "attendance of record."
  • As of 4 years ago when we set up our attendance there wasn't another way to report it. I'd be curious to see if that has changed.

However, it's not a problem anymore and has been some time since we got calls from parents since we have publicized it enough that now they know. We have basic trainings for new families and this is specifically mentioned in those materials so the new families are also notified.

We have a note on the report card that says "Please note: Attendance for grades 7-12 is calculated per period (8 period day), not per day." This note is placed in the attendance section of the report card so we don't need to explain to other schools our students may transfer to, either.
