Submitting late assignments - what am I missing?

I am struggling to understand something, and I'm hoping this amazing community can help.

My current understanding is that there is not a way for teachers to allow late submission - that once the due date for an assignment has passed, the only way for a student to submit an assignment is for the teacher to artificially adjust the due date for the entire section. Is that correct?

If so, I feel like there's a feature missing here. In our school and in the local public school system they are moving to a “late with no penalty" grading model. It seems to me that a teacher should be able to mark an assignment as "allow submission after due date" or to simply leave assignments open for submission (but have them marked as late), and that the ability to submit should not just disappear after the due date.

I hope I'm just misunderstanding how this works! Can anyone help clarify this for me?

  • Students can submit assignments after the due date/time. Previously, a student couldn't submit an assignment if it was already GRADED and “graded” also meant if it was marked “Missing” and given a grade of “0” but this isn't the be case any longer (I don't know when it changed).

As soon as a due date passes, if the student hasn't submitted, I give a “0” and mark “missing”. The student is still able to submit the assignment and I see their submission as “late”.

  • Thanks, @Megan! It seems like a couple of students are just experiencing some kind of glitch - student shared a screenshot that showed the assignment marked as “completed” even though no grade was committed and no files or inline text submitted. Glad to know it's not a systemic issue!

@Morgan Kunze - I have fielded many questions from students and teachers asking why a student can't turn in late work. In most cases, students just could not find the late assignments to submit work.

    • On the Assignments page, they may have to click Previous in the Date View box on the right side of the page.
    • On the Calendar page, the student can go back to the date the assignment was due, and click on it. Then click on More Details to get to the assignment page.
    • In the Assignment Center, switching to Month view will make it easier for students to see the assignment.

If the student finds the the assignments and it is marked as Completed:

    • if the LMS thinks that there is a submission, the teacher should see button to Allow resubmit in the Submitted text area of the assignment's evaluation page. The student can then re-submit work.
    • If the student sees that it was complete but the teacher doesn't see a grade or a submission, you can report it to Case Central for assistance in investigating.
