Due dates and notifications - set on forms and/or on checklists?

Hi all, we are coming up on our second cycle using BB for enrollment management. Our application process has candidates completing several school forms. I'm confused on the options for adding due dates and notifications. I can attribute them on the form themselves and in the checklists. Does anyone have a recommendation for which works better? I don't want students to see conflicting information or get duplicate notifications.
