Gift to an endowment fund at a community foundation

Hi all - I'm new at my organization and haven't run into this before. We have a gentleman who makes a gift to our local community foundation for an endowment fund that is for us.

I'm curious how others would enter this gift in RE - or even if they would. The gift is for us, but not to us. In years past, it's been entered as if it's a regular gift to us but I'm not sure if that's correct.

Has anyone run into this before, and how do you handle it?

  • It's not a gift to you, so if you do want to record it, make sure you don't receipt it and that it is clear that it's not a real gift to you. Depending on how many gifts you get to your fund at the CF, this might be a lot of work.

If recording it doesn't make sense, the best thing to do is steward them. I worked at a Community Foundation and that is what we told our partners to do.

  • Thank you for your advice! I have no idea how I'd record it as a gift but not a real gift so I'm leaning towards not recording it and just making sure that the fundraiser assigned to the constituent does stewardship on it.
