GDPR - Right to be forgotten

Just a quick question in regards to GDPR.

We have just deleted records from the past 6 years, however I am currently wanting to know how everyone records tributes.

Before we used to create a constituent record and mark them as a tribute so donations could go against them. But with the new rules this cannot be done.

How does everyone log tributes?

If the honoree has a record, we put the
tribute on their record.

If they don’t, but the person being notified
of the gift has a record, we put it on their record.

If neither has a record, we add it to a catch
all record “In memory 2020” on which we place these types of
tributes.

The problem I see with putting any information on the tribute record is, since they won't actually be donating they will be getting deleted by the end of the year. Which means, if the family ask for a total then we wouldn't actually have it. The person giving the gift may be an option with the tribute going into the reference field, that way we can query on that for the total.

According to the ICO, GDPR doesn't apply to deceased people - only to the living - so you could keep these records.

In addition to linking gifts as tributes, we also use a gift attribute on our records to indicate tribute gifts to people/pets/groups not listed in our database. You could go that route. You could probably do a gift query export of all gifts tied to tribute records and use that to build a pair of attribute imports for gifts made "In Memory of" or "In Honor of."
