Adding Incoming Parent/Student Roles to Resource Boards

We have been closely examining how we are onboarding families during the pandemic and decided some changes need to be made to better assist the incoming parents and students as well as reinforcing the need to use resources on our K-12 platform to find help. To begin executing this plan, we would ideally be able to have Resource Boards specifically for Incoming Parents and Incoming Students. Unfortunately, that is not an option at this point. Some digging through the posted Ideas reveals that this has been requested multiple time before as early as July 2015. If you believe this could assist your school as well, please vote for these ideas (172 total votes so far) - hopefully they will be merged by the admin team and enhancements may be made in this area.

  • I built a Resource Board for our Incoming Parents. Membership is based on a Smart Group List with the following criteria:

    Topic - is Parent of Candidate - with the following three filters:

    1. Candidate Decision equals Accepted

    2. List as Parent = Yes

    3, Candidate Entering Year = {next academic year}

    I also have an additional filter of School Decision is not equal to - Accepted Sibling - since parents of our incoming siblings don't need this Resource Board.

    Does that accomplish what you need?

    As always, you have a great work around. I appreciate your guidance. I just wish we didn't always have to find ways jury rig the system to handle what seems like fundamental tasks. I have forwarded your wisdom to our communications team and will let them play with it.

  • So I've gone and done as Candace suggests and created a Community Group that is populated via a Smart Group and it would appear that it COULD work great however when I create a test user who only has the role of "Parent of Candidate" and then log in as said test user, they only see a blank screen when they click on the community group. If I impersonate a user who has more than that one role (say Staff who has a candidate or an existing Parent who also has a candidate), they can see the bulletin board just fine. Created a case with Blackbaud and they verified that they can indeed reproduce the issue and they are looking into it.
  • I completely agree with everything you've written here Jamie. We too would like the ability to share Resource boards with families of Incoming Students. I wish it wasn't this complicated. Keep us posted.

    Also, I have to confess I don't even know what a Smart Group List is or how to build one - if you wouldn't mind directing me a little on that I'd like to explore that a bit more.

    Thank you in advance!
