Who does your Technology Dept report to in your Organizational Chart?

We are currently working to reorganize our organizational chart and wondering where the IT depart falls in other schools charts? Thanks for any replies!

    IT (infrastructure) is direct report to the Head of School. The Computer Science Department (academic classes) direct report to the division head. It the same people, but we found this making this distinction between the infrastructure and teaching/academic responsibilities made the most sense.

  • It might be worthwhile to ask respondents here to describe whether their head of IT also oversees (or even performs, personally) the EdTech responsibilities at the school.

    There's a historical pattern of schools (especially independent schools) expecting all things of one person, i.e. loading a Tech Director with some combination of tech infrastructure, EdTech (technical professional development for faculty and for students), Database administration, Innovation/Makerspace and Computer Science-type responsibilities (often while also overseeing positions like Helpdesk or Systems Administration).

    Some schools include their Tech Director in their administrative leadership team; too many do not. Though this model may have worked in the past, it's increasingly untenable with modern demands on all of those categories.

    Our Tech Director reports to the Director of Finance but quite frankly should be reporting directly to the Head of School, and oversees the SysAdmin and Helpdesk positions. We have no distinct EdTech or technology integration positions.

  • Thank you so much for responding! Oh so true about multiple hats. We are all wearing way too many at most times. Our IT is a 3-person team split up by IT Director (all things tech plus project management), Database Manager (setup/mange/train for all dbs across the school) and Technology Support Technician (sets up/fixes all tech for school). Massive undertaking for sure. Currently our department reports to Director of Finance also.
  • My department reports to the CFO. Which works out for discussion regarding funding/budgets.
