Dorm - Create Single Term or Multiple Terms?

Do boarding schools usually create Dorm Groups using a single, year-long term or use multiple terms that correspond to the academic terms?

@Jennifer Welch - we have 170 boarding students (plus 530 day students). We use one year-long term. We do the same for the Advisory term.

We have a few 8th grade boarders (along with boarders in grades 9 - 12), so we created divisions for Upper School and Middle School (for Academics, Advisory, Athletics) and Entire School (for Dorms).

  • @Brian Gray Thank you! Do you have any issues/caveats with historical reporting on students who switched dorms mid-year? We are in the initial phase of setup for our groups and would like to be able to track a student's dorm history throughout their time at our school.

@Jennifer Welch - You can do this with an Advanced List. Some variation of this will get you what you need.

Dorm assignments are treated in the same way a enrollment in an academic course section (more or less). When a student changes dorm rooms, the change is recorded as a “drop” from one dorm/room and an “add” to another dorm/room.
