How is your Foundation tracking program related investments in Blackbaud Grantmaking?

Hoping to get some tips on how to track PRIs in our BBGM software. Right now we make cash grants only and will begin doing PRIs. I want to make sure we track them in a way that our reports are clean and can be separated easily. All ideas are welcome.

    What is meant by “PRI's”?

  • @Erika May Thank you for asking. A PRI is a program related investment. It is a loan vs. a grant that is made by a foundation to a nonprofit. PRIs are made with the primary purpose of accomplishing a mission, not the generation of returns. The benefit of PRIs (according to Section 4944(a) of the IRS Code) is they are eligible to count against the 5% payout that foundations are required to make each year to retain their tax-exempt status.

Because they are a loan vs. a grant, I would like to see how other foundations track them so that they can separate them quickly for reporting purposes.

I can always count on you for a clear and concise answer. Thank you!

Hi Sheree - It depends on the type of PRI. For some, we track them in BBG (although not ideal) and for others, they are tracked only in our accounting system and identified in our financial statements.
