Security of data for SmartSOCIAL

We were looking forward to adding the SmartSOCIAL app. For those who use it, do you have security concerns?

The first step of installation is to add ModHeader with this popup warning:

7b421223c30f9a4c405f24d4515a4ab2-huge-im

Our university IT department could not tell me either way as they do not work with/know our BB software. Their reply said there were a number of negative reviews about the ads ModHeader injects to web pages which doesn't seem relevant to SmartSOCIAL.

I did reach out to SmartTHING but did not get a much clearer response.

The above popup is really a red flag to me. Am I right to be concerned?

  • @JoAnn Strommen Hi JoAnn, Warren from SmartTHING here. Just to confirm our helpdesk chat: We are not affiliated with or have any benefit from your use of ModHeaders. We are not aware of any issues around ModHeader and adverts or any other problems. I have responded to your ticket further directly with a message from the developer of ModHeaders where they explain the misunderstanding around the changes they made to the extension and how they have found a way of monetising through a Pro version the extension and are not causing adverts or any other changes to users browsers. The only reason we require you to use such an extension, is to allow Linkedin to appear in a window next to Raiser's Edge record. Cheers Warren

The ModHeader warning raises valid security concerns. Before installing SmartSOCIAL, seek clarity on the ModHeader warning for security assurance.

  • @Rubka Nitgar @JoAnn Strommen we have added the option of using requestly instead of modheaders now to the instructions for our free giveaway SmartSOCIAL. As we say we have nothing to do with either chrome extension. They just allow the use of LinkedIn in a sidebar. Up to clients to assess which they wish to use.
