Gift records and constituent codes

Is it possible to disable the constituent code from being automatically added to gift records?

@Gabe Shalley no, I don't believe so. I've been using RE since time immemorial and this is the first I've heard that request. Why is it that you want this disabled? Most organizations don't even know it exists!

@Gabe Shalley Wondering the same things as Karen. Why disable? Even if you are not using it for reporting / gift metrics it's pretty unintrusive.

If it's showing what you determine is the wrong code, it's because your constituent codes are not in the correct sequence for records with multiple codes..

Thanks, I am working through deleting old constituent codes and its just an extra step in doing that to delete them from the gift records. We don't use CC much, so no need for them to be on gift records to begin with!

@Gabe Shalley Gift Constituency is generally based off the primary constituent code, so it would be best to remove them from the constituent first.

I am curious as to why you don't use constituency codes much. That's the first time I've heard that…

@Gabe Shalley I did a constit code clean up but didn't worry about the codes on gifts at the time.
Some of those clean up tasks can be done by global change. I have gone back to clean up some gift coding but hasn't been a priority for old gifts. I've marked the old codes as inactive and when I have time will run a gift query and do more clean up.

Best of luck with your clean up project.

We rely on memberships more than constituent codes

@Gabe Shalley gotcha! That can be a pain when you are doing cleanup. Are you using global change, at least, to clean them? Still a separate step, but at least you wouldn't be doing them individually.

Hopefully once they are all clean and your new policies are in place, there won't be an issue. Gift constituencies can be helpful in some situations, though I confess that haven't worked with many organizations who used and managed it well.

@Gabe Shalley NOT a good idea at all. Gift Constituency is good for reporting. If someone was just an individual and then a board member, you can distingugish the gifts from time as an individual to times as a board member. Same with an alumni who eventually becomes a board member.

  • @Gabe Shalley Are you using Power Automate at all? I have a flow that takes a constituent's current Constituent Codes and adds them as Custom Fields on the gift record. This way they are all captured at the time of the gift - only registering the primary constituent code is rather useless, especially with Foundation and DAFs. Let me know and I can send it over!
