Gift in-Kind minimum and stewardship strategy

Hello Community!

I'm reaching out to you to see if anyone has parameter and reasoning for minimum gift in-kind acceptance and what strategy do you have for stewardship of these donors.

Thank you!

Chris

Hi Chris Vaz‍ - We have a Gift Acceptance Policy that outlines the guidelines of gifts we accept; for GIK donations we only accept gifts that can be used to advance the mission of our organization. If I did not answer your question, let me know.
  • Thanks so much for your answer Austen Brown. We do have a gift acceptance policy as well but we have not specified a minimum for in-kind donations. Which is not a problem but I was wondering if anyone/organization does actually have a minimum. I also wanted to find out if there is a different moves management approach to in-kind donors. Does your organization have a different approach to in-kind donors? and if so, what is different about it?
  • I think it depends what you use the gift-in-kinds for.  We use the GIK that we receive as silent auction/live auction/raffle items to help raise funds for the Campaign we are working on.  We decided, this year, that we will treat these people the same way we treat our Cash Donors, because without them we wouldn't be able to raise the funds we raise.  Before this year, they were basically excluded.  We didn't show any real appreciation, I am sad to say, besides an acknowledgement of our gift and a recognition at the event on who donated said item.  They weren't invited to our annual thank you events and really should of because some of the GIK's we receive are quite valuable.  Hope this is what you were looking for, if not, let me know and maybe I can clarify better.  We do not have a minimum for GIKs accepted.

  • Yes, this is what I am looking for Shawna Morrell! Like your organization we want to start stewarding our GIK donors the same way we steward our cash donors. Thank you so much for your input!

On the topic of a minimum amount - we don't have a minimum because we have a couple of donors who send us postal stamps and often it's a selection of different stamps to make up an amount like £5 or £10 or something.
  • Thank you Rachel Cavalier! I'm finding hard to justify a minimum as well. People give what they can and it it helps the mission of the organization is valuable all the same.
  • I believe, you need to do a cost and value analysis and set a business rule for your organization to determine, what is worth it and what amount would make sense to have as a cut off minimum. Just because the GIK is useful for the purpose of your mission does not mean it is helpful, if you spend more time receipting and add up the few admin minutes to make it happen. Our policy is to receive a minimum of $10, but receipt only if $20 or more.

    Hope this helps.
  • This is a good point Manonita Das. Our policy is to receipt $15 or more so we could use this as our overall GIK policy as well. I will bring this up to my team.
