"Total Students" not correct when coming from 2 families

We have a handful of students that come from 2 families (divorced, or separated).  These families are connected in the system via "split family" option under "parent and student info".  However, the student count total does not reflect this, and still treats the students as separate.  So when you look at the total number of students, it is higher than it actually is.  Can we get a fix for this?  We have 4 students that are being counted twice in the total.
