Business Outreach Specialist: GSMA Headquarters, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg, TN

Job Statement: Great Smoky Mountains Association (GSMA) is seeking an experienced non-profit professional who is passionate about public lands to join their team as the next Business Outreach Specialist. GSMA is fortunate to have over 27,000 individual members and 170 business members helping the organization achieve its mission of supporting Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our members are the lifeblood of our organization and serve as stewards of America’s most visited national park.


Broadly, the Business Outreach Specialist will work closely with the Membership Director to develop and grow the organization’s membership programming. They will help manage our Altru database by processing business member communications, registrations, renewals, upgrades, donations, and event ticketing and executing regular database maintenance tasks. The BOS will strive to realize retention and recruitment goals and oversee the syncing of membership information between internal systems.


The ideal candidate is highly organized, self-motivated, and outgoing with an ability to nurture relationships in our park’s gateway communities. They should be comfortable providing exemplary customer service and working directly with members, donors, all levels of GSMA staff, and the Board of Directors.

Duties: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Recruit and retain business memberships via Lookout League-branded program
  • Build, nurture and maintain community relationships with individuals and organizations whose influence supports GSMA’s mission
  • Maintain membership records via the Altru customer relationship management (CRM) database
  • Process membership payments and maintain related accounting reports
  • Ensure the timely delivery of benefits to active members
  • Recruit donations, gifts and in-kind services from business members designed to enhance other aspects of our organization, including the individual membership program, annual Members Weekend and staff incentives
  • Offer advertising opportunities to business members
  • Work with Membership team to support Branch Out and Members Weekend programming
  • Work with Webmaster to develop and maintain business membership sections of GSMA’s website
  • Work with Marketing partner to produce press releases and social media content related to new GSMA business partners
  • Assist in the design of business membership literature and information for both internal and external sources
  • Take and/or recommend steps to ensure business membership recruitment and retention goals are achieved
  • Participate as assigned with annual Members Weekend program, which includes required on-site attendance
  • Prepare business membership reports as needed
  • Assist with development of budget data for Membership Department as needed
  • Work with Retail Department to ensure adequate staffing for all off-site and tradeshow opportunities
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and practical experience with departmental membership procedures and record-keeping efforts
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of membership programs, including departmental regulations for data capture within Altru

Additional functions: Operate a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. Performs other related duties as required by GSMA management.

Minimum training and experience: Bachelor’s degree in business, fundraising or development, nonprofit management, or related field; two (2) years of experience in development, fundraising, or sales management; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Experience in Blackbaud's Altru or RE required. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Type: Full time, 40 hours per week based in Gaitlinburg, TN
