Does anyone remember the movie Around the World in 80 Days? In the period it was set in, flying around the world in a hot air balloon was seen as madness, crazy, and foolish. But once the modern airplane came to be, many of those balloon dreams faded away.

As for long-ago adventures - I don't think that this really ever went away, but personally I would love to go on more long train journeys. No Murder on the Orient Express though, something a little less exciting ?

I remember reading the book in lit class long ago. The book is better than the movie, btw -- as usual! ? And, one of the very few sci fi books written by Jules Verne that could actually have happened. The rest of his works, like Journey to the Center of the Earth, were based on scientific speculations of the time that were rapidly outdated!

I saw the original (I'm old! ) and I loved it! I would love to have a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to fly over all of the ridiculous traffic there is now!!! Or a vehicle from the Jetsons!!
