Philanthropic Giving Data Analyst - University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL

The Division of Development and Alumni Relations has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Philanthropic Giving Data Analyst to work in Coral Gables, FL.

The Data Analyst is critical to the success of the Division, ensuring information is accurate and complete according to business rules and in alignment and industry standards and best practice. This role reports to the Assistant Vice President, Development Resources with additional guidance and direction from the Assistant Vice President, Philanthropic Giving + Digital Engagement. The Data Analyst creates the specifications and creates/executes the queries for fundraising/marketing lists – reviewing the lists for quality control and accuracy.

This role will lead the help develop and maintain data collection best practices, use pattern analysis to guarantee data quality, provide recommendations for process improvement, and prepare updated marketing and donor files to correct or complete data as necessary. It is critical this individual is knowledgeable of data standards and best practices as they relate to higher education fundraising, specifically alumni participation and engagement. The Data Analyst’s primary focus will be focusing on delivering the data needs for alumni fundraising marketing data while working closely with the Engagement team.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with department, division and university colleagues regarding all alumni data development and consumption to ensure compliance and effective processing and control of critical data elements.
  • Partner with Philanthropic Giving to identify constituent segments to be targeted for marketing and solicitation to enhance alumni participation and retention of donors.
  • Query, validate, and generate all required alumni or donor lists needed for philanthropic giving, digital engagement, or donor stewardship marketing strategies. Use reporting tools to generate the lists.
  • Partner with Development Resources colleagues and represent Philanthropic Giving’s needs in the creation of data standards and policies.
  • Perform data analysis to identify anomalies, make recommendations for automatic identification and remediation of data issues. Filter and “clean” data by reviewing reports, printouts, and performance indicators to locate and correct anomalies.
  • Participate in strategic alumni participation and engagement data projects.
  • Serve as a data subject matter expert for the division’s alumni data sets – articulating the nuances of the data and how it should be interpreted/understood.
  • Maintain an expert understanding of US News & World Report and other vital ranking systems to ensure growth in revenue and donor count are met annually and reported consistently.
  • Establish trend analysis and predictive and forecasting models per constituency type to ensure annual growth in donor count for all constituencies, with a focus on alumni.
  • Interpret data, analyze results using prescribed techniques and provide ongoing support to division staff regarding data usage to facilitate strategic decisions as it pertains to alumni participation and engagement.
  • Inform the process of creating specifications for and testing new self-service reports that Development Resources creates for Philanthropic Giving.
  • Work with Engagement leadership to prioritize business and information needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required with a minimum of 5 years of experience or relevant professional experience. A combination of education/experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency with relational databases including the use of reporting tools to query databases and extract relevant data.
  • Experience retrieving data using SQL preferred but not required.
  • Proven experience working with complex data sets in a distributed data environment.
  • Experience with constituent relationship management solutions. Knowledge of Blackbaud product suite preferred, particularly Blackbaud CRM and/or Blackbaud Data Warehouse.
  • Ability to understand large, complex data sets and use this understanding to apply business rules in alignment with data standards/policies.
  • Experience in using data visualization tools (i.e. Tableau or similar).
  • Ability to correlate heterogeneous information/data into meaningful facts for analysis and/or reporting.
  • Ability to establish goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Word and Excel.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience in higher education or nonprofit fundraising preferred.
  • Working knowledge of alumni participation, donor or customer retention, and donor or customer acquisition preferred.
