Role/Shared Report suggestions for department chairs?

I'd like to arm my department chairs with access to data that could empower them to do their jobs even better. For instance, I was just thinking I'd like them to be able to run Report Card Grades Lists. What suggestions do you all have for roles and or shared lists to empower department chairs?

  • @Ted Parker We gave department chairs access to the “Grade Book Printout - By Teacher" report so they could basically see teacher's gradebooks. It's an “OK” solution for the time being but we would LOVE the ability to give department chairs the “Gradebook Manager” role but without the ability to edit/change grades. In other words, we really want our chairs to be able to open teacher's gradebook (in their “Faculty” persona) and see grades/comments/etc.

We have created Department Head accounts with the faculty role. Each of these department head accounts is listed on the courses as a teacher, so when our department heads log in with this account, they have every course in the department in their dropdown menu. It does mean they can edit things, but we find this to be helpful when we have subs (or long term subs), when they need to access information (finalize or review grade changes/resolve incompletes, etc.) after a teacher leaves the school. It also allows them to take attendance if needed. Since they are a teacher on every class in their department, it also allows them to easily publish topics between classes. This is super helpful when new teachers are hired into their department. They can also check to make sure all report card grades are in (Grading Tab). I also give these accounts access to advanced lists I build with term grades over the years for courses in their department, exam grades, etc. It's a work around, but we did this when we had EE/FAWeb as well, so it's the type of access our Dept. Heads have always had for many years.

I agree entirely. A Dept Head role with access to VIEW gradebooks within their same department would be so helpful. I also want our Academic Dean to have this access for the whole school without editing ability. One of the areas the Education solution falls short is that all of the roles that you can give basically give editing access. I would love to expand what people can see (without being able to EDIT).

  • Here are the ideas (that still need to be merged) about allowing someone to have a gradebook “view only” permission.

Role Access to Grades and Grade Books by Department

Grade Bok View Only Option for Admin

    View Only Grade Book Access

  • @Ted Parker I have increasingly been trying to get department heads to use the advanced list features ie. the gradebook grades list because it can show them some great section and term level grading data
