How Do You Make Work Fun?

What ways do you like to spark joy and fun at the workplace or in your own tasks?

I personally like to inject some humor into my emails with puns or observational gags (where appropriate, of course. I don't send my greatest hits to board members or our CEO*).

*It's tempting though….

Not meaning to be impolite to anyone, but if you have to create some sort of artificial atmosphere (of a sort) to make your primary work fun, then you might ought to be looking for a new line of work. Now, I wrote “primary” because some kinds of “work” are the kinds that you have no choice.

@Bobby Steurer I work from home, so that is fun for me! But to make things more lively, I love to have mid-morning or mid-afternoon dance breaks. Just about 5 minutes dancing to a favorite tune and singing to my heart's content. I feel like the rockstar that I am, lol!

@Bobby Steurer I find joy in writing very dry professional emails to groups that start off with something like “Hello Party People”.

I also enjoy sending this disappointed cat to people who store information in excel files rather than putting info into the database.

@Bobby Steurer - At my last job (in-person org) we had a FUN Committee which would plan fun activities for the office (all optional, of course):

• Birthday Buddies - Think secret Santa but for birthdays
• Chili Cook-offs
• Bake-offs
• Pi Day Celebration
• Start of summer celebration - org was a kid's camp
• Themed lunches - org provided lunch one day a week
• Decorating the office for different holidays
• etc.

It started with an office mgr who said she didn't like gnomes. Of course I had to bring one in to add to the one that someone had given her not knowing this. Now it's a source of entertainment with moving the two around the office. Even the office cleaning crew have gotten involved - we've found them up on the air duct work and atop the exit signs so we knew it wasn't just staff doing it. Right now one is peaking down at office mgr's desk.

@M George, ah but it's not about creating an artificial atmosphere. Every job, no matter how awesome, comes with its highs and lows. Adding a little fun is just how some people keep the teamwork running smoothly by reminding each other to take joy in good company instead of getting bogged down in tasks and deadlines. It's not about the job … it's about the people!

That is why this desktop cat vac will be making an appearance in our office this month. ? Like some of the others, we enjoy passing random items around the office like rubber chickens and tiny sheep figurines.
