Membership Upgraded without payment

Hello All! Recently we upgraded a constituent's membership. While going through the process Altru never asked for any form a payment. It just automatically processed it. We thought that the patron had perhaps set their annual payment on auto renew and Altru just charged their card. Turns out, it did not.

Upon further review of the constituent's record Altru charged them via check. All without ever asking for a check payment to be processed. At the end of the day our teller wasn't missing a check from their report. Any ideas on how that happened and how to prevent it from happening again?
