Apple Vision Pro: Thoughts? Fad or Future?
I keep seeing this Apple Vision Pro popping up in my feeds. I'm not sure what to think about it. Part of me wants to embrace all technology that helps us evolve, but part of me thinks this would make me very sick walking around with it on. I do like the idea of this on an airplane, but think I'm okay with just watching movies on my phone. What are your thoughts on it? Fad or Future?

@Crystal Bruce I would like to think its a fad. Look at the smartwatch: everyone thought they HAD TO HAVE one to count steps. Now, I dont hear muich about them.
Since our phones and tablets are almost at max capacity for their function, they have to think up more technology. Even refrigerators and dryers are plugged in and using too much broadband! I would be ill trying to watch a movie with that on. But I am giving my age away on this one! Haha!

@Crystal Bruce It's hard to say at this point. Apple has a long history of initially charging high prices for the first version of their hardware, appealing mostly to early adopters. By the time the third or fourth generation of the product rolls out, it's been vastly refined and has a much broader appeal at a price the average consumer can afford. I think if any company is going to make headsets more mainstream, it's them. I'm just not sure that most people are ok with wearing a headset for a majority of their day. It could be great for creative jobs, but I don't really see many enterprise scenarios where this technology is a vast improvement over, say, using Excel on two 32" monitors with a mouse and keyboard.

I don't see this early version as catching on. But, our "cultural brain" has pretty much become fanatically set on a vision of us eventually living our “virtual realities”, and the only realistic ways to do that are through 1) tech-glasses or 2) AI-brain readers with implant chips. (They are already working on prototypes of the 2nd system for disabled people, here, but I doubt that will ever become mainstream.)I conjecture that the tech-glasses will become a thing. But, like computers, they won't become popular until the technology evolves to the point that they are smaller and affordable – just like the difference between the first generation and fifth generation computers below. (I believe we're now on generation 6 or 7, and phones are now being considered part of the computer evolution.) I'm pretty sure nobody imagined a big clunker first generation computer in their livingroom, and that's exactly what the glasses make me think of!

@Crystal Bruce - I agree with @Faith Murray - it's unlikely to be the first generation but the sixth or seventh has a definite possibility. Looking back I am sure no one thought when the mobile phone came out that in some point in the future society would evolve to where we message each other rather than converse in-person. I can see a world where no one “sees" each other anymore - on the plus side maybe our posture will improve.

@Bobby Steurer, I agree. I also wonder about the people who have vision impairment or whether this will cause vision impairment if we have screens that close to our eyes for that long. Eye strain and “tech neck" are already issues with close cell phone use.

@Crystal Bruce
I agree! I am ok with technology helping us evolve, but I can't see myself walking around with this on. I think it's a Fad and they will come up with something else.0 -
@Faith Murray
Great point Faith! That is truly something to think about. It just might be something after a few generations.0 -
@Crystal Bruce I think because it's Apple, it's automatically a ‘status’ item for many people especially those who like to be the first to have the latest gadget.
I have an Oculus but only use it for entertainment, not for the business / meeting functions. I also find it a bit uncomfortable since I wear glasses and have to fit the headset over them. It's a lot of weight on my face! Condensation is an issue sometimes, too. Looking back at the Google Glass, I'd personally prefer something that is easier to wear and still allows the user to see the real world around them.
I agree with what others have said - - maybe it'll catch on after a few more updated versions. For now, it's a cool new toy for people to have! I'd like to hear from anyone who has tried it. ;-)
