Set Preferred Name for Sport Team Rosters

Does anyone know if there is an easier way to set a student's Preferred name for sport rosters? I know we can set it for their contact card, but we have to individually change the name to list as their preferred name under each sport team roster. Any suggestions? Or has anyone added this to the idea bank? I could not find it.

Hi Coco - I don't have an answer but stumbled upon this issue as well so trying to confirm if your issue is the same as mine. We do not pubblicly publish the student roster to the public side of the site but we do publish the coaches. Internally, my coach and student rosters display their preferred names, but on the public team pages it displays/defaults to the coaches given names - is that what you are experiencing? If so, how have you have you been able to change the name that displays - is that something you do through the public side of the site/ We have a designated web person that handles all the public side of site so I can't see thst option.

Hi Beth,

We don't use the website component of Blackbaud, so our Communications Dept. separately adds all the published team information with the schedule. The person who sets up the team rosters in Blackbaud has to individually change their first name to preferred name. It would make sense to use the preferred name as the default instead of their first name. More often the preferred and first are the same name anyway. I will add it to the idea bank. Vote for it please!!

Thank you for responding. I checked the blog and it refers to preferred names in advanced lists and a few other areas but does not refer to setting preferred name as the default name for sport rosters. When support helped me, they showed me how to do it by student in each sport team roster list. I was hoping there was a way to set it, similar to how we set the contact card to display their preferred name.

I had to give it a try; sorry it didn't help:). Hopefully, someone in our K12 Community has found a workaround to make it a more efficient process.

Hi all, looking for some input here. I'm considering removing the checkbox to display preferred name in the athletic roster members and just doing default logic across the board to ‘if preferred name exists display that and last else first and last'. I've tried to find out why historically we did an explicit setting here versus other areas of the app and it seems there was more fear on product's end at the time that schools would want flexibility on athletic rosters since they're public on SWS but I have no evidence that is the case, and only feedback that schools want it to automatically work like that without a setting. Looking for affirmation of that or if there are schools out there that want the setting to stay please chime in. thanks!

YES, PLEASE. Make the default logic apply to everything! Students and parents still see the teacher first name instead of preferred when looking at their courses on the progress tab and schedule when preferred name is shown in the directory.

@Angie Addison - I agree with @Susan Ott. The default behavior for all users on any page that students or parents see should be “Show the preferred name if it exists. Show the first name if the preferred name does not exist.”

This is especially important for students who are transitioning gender.

While you're at it, please think about adding a preferred last name field. Students from Spanish speaking countries often have a hyphenated legal last name, but commonly use only part of it day-to-day. (The trick is that in some countries, they use the first part and in other countries they use the last part.) Having a “preferred last name” field would make life a lot easier for me.

Can you please tell me how to find this checkbox for Preferred Name in team rosters? Our rosters only show the first name, not the preferred name.

And I would greatly prefer that Team Rosters have the same functionality as the rest of the site!

I figured out where to check the box for Preferred Name for the individual students.

Another issue I am seeing is that the Extended Rosters (Reporting>Reports>Athletics>Roster Reports>Extended Rosters) only show the first name, not the preferred name.
