Pricing for membership levels based on number of people allowed in at one time

Hello,

Do any organizations have membership levels that are based on the number of people allowed in at one time with the member? And if yes, what are your prices for the higher number levels?  Currently, our museum has the traditional levels: Individual, Couple, Family. We are hoping to transition to One Person, Two People, Four People, etc.

An example of this type of structure would be The National Museum of Toys/Miniatures in Kansas City, MO.

Our museum is in Tucson, AZ so we are trying to get replies from different areas of the country in order to compare pricing structures.

Thank you,

  • Good morning! We are also considering changing to a membership structure like this, so I'm very curious to see other responses too. We currently have a traditional structure of Family, Family Plus (2 guests per visit), Advocate, etc. We would like to make it easier for single parents and families with caregivers to choose a more appropriate level. We are in the San Francisco Bay Area. My initial thoughts on pricing were something like this:

    2 people: $100

    4 people: $150

    8 people: $200

I have no idea if these are good prices or what it would do to our membership base. But COVID has completely decimated our membership program, so this seems like as good a time as any to make some major changes!

    Thanks,

  • At the Maryland Science Center we have this type of General Membership Program

    Explorer for 1 - $100

    Voyager for 2 - $125

    Adventurer for 4 - $150

    Discoverer for 6 - $175

We keep the admission very simple and flexible. Good as we have barebones staff! The cardholder can bring in a certain number of people (unnamed on the record) for free per day. EX: Adventurer - the cardholder can bring in three others - adult OR child

Children under three are free for all

    A child is considered ages 3 - 12

General member cardholder must be an adult. And only one other person is permitted on an account - a spouse or domestic partner.

Please let me know if you need any other assistance - we have upper levels for 7, 8, 9 and 10. Each level tops off at a certain number. Anyone over in the group would pay full price. The member can also upgrade right then and there.

General Memberships end at a level of 10 admits.

  • Hi Michelle,

Thank you for your time and reply!

I'm sorry to hear that your membership program has been hit so hard
    by the pandemic.

I know our new memberships have dropped significantly, since most
of the time we get new members signing up in person after
    physically going through the museum.

I think it has hurt renewals/rejoins as well but not as much as the
    new memberships.

I also posted this question on AAM and had a few responses back on
    there as well.

One of the responders mentioned checking out the Art Institute of
    Chicago and
    the Chicago Architecture Center.

    These
three may be more of a help to you as far as pricing goes. Not sure
if we could charge the same prices here in Tucson,
    AZ.

  • Hi Megan,

Thank you for those other resources! That will be a big help as we evaluate. Good luck with your program.

    Michelle
  • Hi Megan,

We do something similar in that we offer individual (one adult) and dual (two adults) level memberships. Children are added-on individually. Our pricing is $30 for individual and $50 for dual. Children (ages 4 and older) are $15 each. We don't have a cap on the number of children you can add and the adults don't have to be in the same household or be related. https://visithandson.org/explore/

We really didn't have much push back with the (slight) price increase from our previous "family" levels. Our renewal percentage stayed very close to what we usually see.
