1st Time Donors

Hello! I am needing to report on new donors each month. I can figure out how to do that but what is throwing me for a loop is some donors are appearing on the query who has a partner that has already given. We just started making spouses into constituents when we receive a check from the spouse. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

This is probably due to soft credits. Can you share your query criteria with us? We'll also need to see your soft credit settings in the query.

This may also have to do with the fact that if you just started making spouses they probably haven't been soft credited for all the previous gifts from the spouse. Here is a knowledgebase solution which will help you best understand that.

Here is the query I am using. I also have gift processing soft credits to both constituents because we do use soft credits for DAF's so for example if we get a gift from a community foundation the gift would be entered under the community foundation and the soft credit would go to the fund. Since the fund is a new donor I need to keep the soft credit setting to both.

Query > First Gift is not going to take "situation" into consideration. It will only condition on the absolute first gift it sees in the record according to date.

    Here's an example:
John Smith first gift Cash 7/1/2025 $0 (bounced check or refund issued)
    John Smith 2nd gift Cash 7/5/2025 $25

in the above case, he will not show up in your query. Query "First Gift" section will always be "targeting" the 7/1/2025 gift.

It will be better you use "summary of gift > total amount of gif". Criteria will be:

    • summary of gift amount = 0
      • gift date before 7/1/2025
      • gift amount > 0 (doesn't matter actually)
      • gift type (types you want)
    • AND summary of gift amount > 0
      • gift date 7/1/2025 - 7/31/2025 (or use last month)
      • gift amount > 0 (doesn't matter again)
      • gift type (types you want)

Katie, Have you tried the New Donors report? Analysis > Standard Reports > Analytical Reports > New Donors Report (couple more clicks than in webview)

Set SC to both - this has worked for us.
