We’re announcing a powerful new enhancement for Blackbaud Raiser's Edge NXT® users in Australia and the UK: Direct debit functionality is now available for Blackbaud Donation Forms! This highly anticipated feature gives your donors even more flexibility in how they give, while streamlining your organisation’s gift processing and improving donor retention.

What’s New?

With this release, organisations in Australia and the UK using Raiser's Edge NXT’s Optimised Donation Forms can now accept new direct debit payments alongside other popular methods like credit cards, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Enabling direct debits on donation forms is now a simple process, allowing nonprofits to seamlessly incorporate this payment option. Additionally, donors are able to select direct debit as a secure and convenient way to make their contributions, further expanding their choices and enhancing the overall donation experience. This builds on previous releases, making direct debit globally available for all Raiser’s Edge NXT customers.

Also, organisations in Australia and the UK using Raiser's Edge NXT’s web view can accept new direct debit payments alongside other payment methods. When you add a gift in Raiser’s Edge NXT web view, the direct debit agreement link will be emailed to the donor automatically.

Why It Matters

Direct debit is a game-changer for organisations looking to grow their sustainer programs:

  • Increase donor retention: Recurring gifts via direct debit are less likely to fail due to expired cards or payment issues.
  • Reduce administrative overhead: Payments are processed automatically, and failed payments can be retried without manual intervention.
  • Lower transaction fees: Direct debit typically incurs lower fees than credit card transactions, meaning more of each donation goes directly to your mission.

By leveraging direct debit, nonprofits can build stronger ongoing relationships with their donors through seamless, predictable giving. This payment method empowers organisations to dedicate more resources to their mission rather than to administrative tasks, ensuring lasting impact in their communities.

Key Benefits

Direct debit enhances your donation forms by providing a range of practical advantages for both your organisation and your donors. These key benefits make this payment method a valuable addition to your fundraising toolkit:

  • Automatic installment processing: Recurring gift payments are processed automatically on the day specified by the donor—no manual intervention needed.
  • Fully automated mandate handling: Direct debit instructions/requests are automatically sent and updated as needed when payment details change.
  • Donor-friendly: Mandates are emailed directly to the donor for easy confirmation.
  • Audit-ready: Mandates, including historical mandates, are stored on the gift records for easy tracking and compliance.
  • Clear status visibility: Easily see the direct debit processing status directly on the gift record in Raiser’s Edge NXT, providing immediate insight into where a payment is in the processing lifecycle.

Together, these key benefits empower nonprofits to streamline their operations, reduce administrative burdens, and ultimately raise more funds by offering donors a seamless and reliable giving experience. By saving valuable time and maximising donation revenue, organisations can focus more on advancing their mission and less on day-to-day processing tasks.

Unlock Effortless Giving with Direct Debit

This enhancement will make it easier for your supporters to give, while helping your organisation save time and maximise the impact of every donation.

Please note: With this release, organizations can begin creating new gifts using direct debit. Blackbaud is actively working on a follow‑up enhancement to support the migration of existing direct debit gifts, which will be available in a future release.

Thank you very much! The link for Users in the UK to enable direct debit leads to a page not found, as does clicking the info button next to Direct Debit in our donation forms. Is there any more documentation about how this work somewhere please? We were also told there would be updated information about fees with direct debit and a Blackbaud University information/training on it - please could you link to those as well?

Hi @Rhiannon Smith sorry about that. Those links should be fixed now. The BBU resource should be coming out soon and I can post it here when it's ready, probably in the next week or so. Thanks for your patience!

@Rhiannon Smith here is the link to the microlearning: Blackbaud University

  • Thank you very much! Is there a way to turn on direct debits without turning on recurring credit/debit card payments as an option? The video didn't show that. Also if we have direct debits taken through a third party (for example on our giving day when the details to set up the direct debit are collected on our third party site and are then sent on to us), how do we go about setting those us through NXT?

@Rhiannon Smith can you clarify what you mean by turning on recurring credit? Do you mean debit card payments? Where are you turning on direct debit?

What we have released is the direct debit functionality processed through Blackbaud Integrated Payments. Raiser's Edge NXT still does not support the third party processing of direct debit

  • Hi Mike

If I tick 'direct debit' under '2. Payment and fees', but don't click 'Recurring' under 'Gift Types' in '1. Get started' on a donation form, then there doesn't seem to be direct debits on the form. However if I do click 'Recurring' under 'Gift Types', the donation form has the option to give both via direct debit or via recurring credit/debit card payment. We would like to have forms that only have direct debit as an option and do not have recurring credit/debit card payment as an option.

I don't think I was clear in my second point - our third party do not process the direct debit, they collect the donor's bank details and send them to us to allow us to set up and process the direct debit ourselves. Is this not possible through NXT?

@Rhiannon Smith Today, forms don’t support restricting to a single payment method. When Direct Debit is enabled, the form will also display other available payment options (e.g., credit/debit cards and digital wallets, if configured on the merchant account). We know having Direct‑Debit‑only forms is important, and the ability to configure forms to display only specific payment types is planned for this year

On the second point: If a third‑party solution is collecting donor and bank details externally, the key consideration is how those details are then entered into Raiser’s Edge NXT. Are they using Webview to enter these gifts? If so, Raiser’s Edge NXT is designed to process Direct Debits directly within Webview. If donor and bank details are entered into Raiser's Edge NXT using supported workflows (e.g., Add Gift), Direct Debit can be processed with Blackbaud Integrated Payments / Blackbaud Merchant Services, and mandates are automatically created and emailed to the donor and installments will be processed automatically on the due date.
