First Name Gender process

Hi all,

Under Constituents/First names you can allocate the gender of a particular name.  But how is this updated in CRM?

Is there a business process that needs to run to allocated these, or is it supposed to be automatic?  It's not automatic at the moment for us.

I have a huge list of records with Gender=Unknown, but many have their first name allocated to a gender in the First Name area.

  • I'm pretty sure it only happens in the add constituent
formbut I'm not entirely sure because we wiped that table out. And
we don't put gender on a record anymore unless we are specifically
provided with it by HR, the registrar, the admissions office, or if
the donor gives us a gender-specific title.  We try not to
    make assumptions anymore.

  • Hi Liz!

There is no business process required; it *should* be automatic with out of the box batches and imports. However, you do need to have the Gender field in the batch templates (not defaulted) that you are importing to. If you have that in place and it still isn't working however, it may be worth a Support Case. It looks like there are other similar cases on Knowledgebase so there is always the possibility that it could be version related or a known issue as well.

    Hope this helps!

  • Great, thanks for that Bethany Davis-Avery:)
  • I'm following up on an old Blackbaud Community post where you mentioned that your organization wiped out the first name configuration table that defaults gender. We would like to do that too and just wondered if there is anything I should be aware of if we do that?

    Thanks,

  • Wiping out the gender defaults table has had no negative effects. Here at UNC, we basically decided that making any assumptions about gender in this day and age was a bad idea, so unless they give us a gender specific title (Mr. Mrs. Ms. Miss Her Magesty etc)… or we are actually provided gender from a reliable source (ie, the Registrar's office), then we just go without gender.
