Migration From Old API to SKY API Tips?

Hi All,

I'm looking into making the move to NXT from RE7 and was wondering if there's a migration guide on how to prepare our tools (Access DBs) that use the current API version (https://www.blackbaud.com/docs/default-source/how-to-documentation/raisers-edge-how-to/raisers-edge-user-guides-administration/API.pdf). Is there anyone that can share their experience with this? If so, any painpoints to be on the lookout for?

Thanks,

Patrick

Edit: is is possible to use RE7 API with NXT, and conversely, SKY API with RE7? Documentation seems ambiguous on this...

SKY API works well, but it's structured differently than the old API, and I believe the old API gave you access to some points of data that are not included in SKY.

The first thing to do would be to look through the SKY API endpoints and make sure all the data you need is available there. Second would be to look at how it's organized. If your end goal is to bring this data into an Access DB so that you can run queries on it, you may find that you need to change your database schema and queries to better reflect how data is provided from SKY.

When we migrated, we had a few solutions that would not work with SKY API and we had to re-imagine and rebuild them. But we also had solutions that just needed a tweak or two.

As far as I know, RE7 API is tied to RE7, and SKY is tied to NXT. But maybe someone else could confirm or correct me.

Hi Patrick Mishina‍ . Unfortunately from what I can tell there's no migration guides for the various APIs with the exception of the School API which has a link to Migration reference on its SKY API reference page.
Ben Regier‍'s suggestion sounds like the next best approach that you could take. Thanks Ben.

As far as compatibility between the different APIs, you're correct that "RE7 API is tied to RE7, and SKY is tied to NXT".

  • Hi Ben,

Thanks for your reply to Patrick Mishina. ‍

We have successfully created a "handshake" between all the RE/FE NXT data and provide full connectivity to your database like when it was on premise.

Mission BI Reporting Access™ and SQL Access™ are Blackbaud Marketplace Applications that enable standardized data source connections to your RE NXT™ and FE NXT™ data from virtually any reporting platform such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, or Crystal Reports.

Reporting Access™ and SQL Access™ are much more than simple API connectors. They are specialized database solutions, hosted and managed in the secure Mission BI Cloud, and optimized as data source connections for advanced custom reporting.

To be clear, our direct database access solution would eliminate the need for the daily backup and automate near real time refreshes in a secure SQL environment within the Mission BI warehouse.
