Emergency Contacts and Siblings

It recently came to my attention that Emergency Contacts are not synched in a household. If a Parent/Guardian has more than one student, say Amber, Natalia and Pam, they have to enter in their emergency contact, Mable, three times. Once for Amber, Once for Natalia and Once for Pam. Needless to say, our parents are not happy. I found a suggestion that we can vote on, see link below.

Please take a moment to vote on this, I'm sure whoever manages this at your institution will thank you :) In the meantime, How do you handle this?

  • I don't have an answer, but your point is well taken. I think that ideally parents would be able to specify a set of emergency contacts for their family – that is, emergency contacts that apply for all of their children – but also be able to override the family emergency contacts with specific contacts for any given child. For example, Aunt Briana, cousin Bill, and neighbor Grace are emergency contacts for all children, but child A has a classmate's Mom as an additional emergency contact and child B has one of a classmate's Dad instead of cousin Bill as an emergency contact.

  • The date on that Idea is 2015 but here we are still looking for a workaround for this issue.

Our 1st solution was to keep emphasizing at back-to-school night every year to our parents (new and returning) that ECs needed to be completed in each child's profile. We might have had 30-40% that did so but we needed 100%.

For the last 5 years, we have sent a paper document home and then have our admin assistants hunt it down from each family in their division during the first couple of months of school. Then the admin assistants enter the information in each child's profile in their division. I must say it is A LOT of unnecessary work for our staff.

If you vote for the Idea that Amber linked consider voting on all of these which are very similar. If I've missed any, please post the links here so we can vote, and hopefully get a resolution. Perhaps BB would merge them.

  • We do an academic school form, assign to every student, so it will say 3 forms if they have 3 children and the email we send beforehand says they need to do it for each child. Yellow bar doesn't go away until they fill out all forms for each child. And subsequent years, the info is already there and they just have to confirm if there are no changes, so it's not such a hassle.
