Receivable and soft credit question

Donor Jim has an open pledge. A second donor, Sam, is sending a check to fulfill Jim's pledge. I will have to record the gift as coming from Sam but am wondering if a soft credit to Jim will fulfill the pledge and close the receivable. Thank you

Hi @Carolyn Grady - It really depends on how your organization handles soft credits. I try to limit the number of soft credits added to the system, but in this particular instance our gift officers find it helpful to see the pledge/payment information represented on the original pledge donor's record (Jim).

When you enter the payment from Sam on the gift record you will want to click the icon that looks like two piece of paper (above "split gift" tab) and choose to apply it to a pledge. (Tried to insert a screen shot but got 'network error' In the pop -up you will need to select Load pledge from and enter Jim's name. You will have the option to select any open pledges on Jim's record to apply the payment. Payment appears on Sam's record but is applied to Jim's pledge. From Jim's pledge you can open the payment record if there's ever a question where payment came from.


No, soft crediting does not affect AR in any way. Not the purpose of soft-crediting.
