Best way to allow a corrected submission for an assignment?

We have a teacher that wants to allow students to make corrections to an assignment file that was submitted through the system in order to get some partial credit. She had made notes/annotations on the file through Blackbaud. She clicked “allow resubmit” for a student in the gradebook, and it looks like that deletes the original file that was submitted along with those notes/annotations. The warning message does not specifically indicate that will happen!

What is the best way to accomplish this? My first thought was to allow two files to be submitted but I wonder how others are handling this issue? Thanks.

  • If your school doesn't use any LTI integrations, your best bet would be to create a second assignment for students to submit to and just make sure that the title and description are clear so students know they only have to submit to the second assignment if they are looking for partial credit. As far as I know there isn't a nice way to do resubmissions with the LMS but I'm curious to see if anyone else has a better idea!

If your school uses the Google Assignments LTI integration, it allows for resubmissions and keeps all versions of the assignment submissions in the teacher's Google Drive. It also makes it really easy for teachers to give feedback with a comment bank.

  • Thanks, Jason and Megan! We will certainly look into the Google Assignments LTI. My teachers have the same concern about resubmission. My other question is whether there's a way for an assignment to be created to allow resubmission after due date/evaluation, or for this to be a bulk option. Currently I believe we have to open each student's assignment view and allow resubmit. Do you have any more efficient way of doing this?

  • We are using the method suggested by Megan in this post to create two assignments, one for first draft and one for final. The first draft assignment options are set to not include in the cumulative grade, so the teacher can mark points there, but put the final grade in the second assignment.
