How do you globally delete an attribute from the database?

We create a contact list for staff members, several of who are no longer with our organization. I went to delete their contact lists and got a warning message that I needed to globally delete the attribute first. So just want to know how to do that. Thanks.

When globally deleting or changing, I often test with a query of only a couple records to be sure the change is exactly what I want and not more. Has prevented some headaches and more data changed than I wanted.
