Using Google Workspace (GSuite) for Education and Microsoft 365 with Microsoft Power Platform

Greetings,

Our email is provided through Google Workspace for Education and our MX records point to Google. We also have a Microsoft 365 tenant using the same domain as Google (set up years ago). My email addresses in both systems is chall@rockhursths.edu. If I send an email through 365 to chall@rockhursths.edu, it is not delivered to my Google email account. I can only see it if I configure Outlook within 365 to view emails coming through internally within that platform.

365 has basically sat dormant, so having email that wouldn't route externally was not an issue. IT began using Teams heavily last year and some of us use OneDrive (in addition to Google Drive - I can explain why if you question our sanity). The email issue wasn't a problem previously because we didn't rely on email notifications from 365. We can see posts while in Teams and we send each other OneDrive links via our Google email to share a document when necessary.

We are evaluating using Microsoft Power Platform with Blackbaud RE, FE, and/or EMS. Before beginning to invest the time to train on the platform, thought it worth seeing if the blended 365 and Google Workspace - with the same email addresses - will be an issue. Has anyone done this where the org has both 365 and Google email address defined and the MX records point to Google?

Aside from the Power Platform, it would be great to solve this issue for other reasons. We considered setting up a new domain and converting Microsoft 365 accounts to that. Then, auto-routing email received into 365 to the Google rockhursths.edu accounts. But, that has other issues we would need to solve (i.e., forwarding and replying back and forth between the two platforms) that I'd rather not dig into if we can avoid. So, if anyone has solved for it, please let me know!

Yes, that does sound like a bit of a mess to deal with!

In terms of how this relates to the Power Platform, I think you will hit the same pain points there that you are hitting currently.

That is to say, if you try to use Power Automate to send email notifications from your 365 accounts, you will see the same routing problems that you see when you try to send them manually.

However, any other Microsoft actions should work, whether you're sending a notification to Teams or saving files in OneDrive or SharePoint. Likewise, if you use the Google connector to send your email notifications rather than the 365 connector, it should be just fine.

Thank you, Ben. This is not unexpected. I am curious if there is anyone else out there like us with this mixed environment. So far, no luck, but I remain hopeful that someone shared our misery and has solved for it!
