Is there a way to change currency notation on printed checks?

So, I have a few different entities, one of which is Canadian. The Canadian entity often has to write checks to the US entity, reimbursing the US org for payments made on its behalf. Obviously, the Canadian org has a Canadian bank, and accomplishes all of its business in CAD.

We constantly run into problems at our bank branches in the US when we take these checks written in CAD, for deposit into our USD account. The bank tellers are absolutely clueless most of the time and never want to recognize foreign checks, even when we explicitly tell them “this check is written in Canadian dollars, not US dollars.”

What ends up happening is that we'll deposit a check for $1,000 (Canadian), yet the bank always wants to credit the check for $1,000 (US). And then, the Canadian account gets debited for whatever the CAD equivalent of $1,000 USD is. It's obviously incorrect, and makes for a huge mess that could have been avoided if the tellers had just done their jobs. In FE, is there any way I can write checks and label the dollar amount as “CAD” rather than “$” ? At least then, we'd be able to show these tellers that the checks are CAD.

Not really. While there is a Currency symbol you can set in Database view : GL>Configuration>General , this affects the whole database. If you need separate currency denominations so the values are not commingled, then I'd recommend separate databases. You could then use the add on module Consolidation Management , where data from several databases can be exported from them and then imported into the main or “Parent” database for consolidated reporting. My only concern with this is , we don't yet have any public knowledge of what the FENXT webview plans for consolidated management are. Will it be converted or not. It's not widely used as it is a specialized module but definitely food for thought for your situation.

You could give the Canadian entity your SWIFT code (get it from your bank, if you don't have it) and ask them to send the money electronically. That way it would be converted to the correct currency in real time and there would be no issues with printed checks or tellers.
