Spontaneous Logout

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Working along in BB Education Management (BEM) in one browser tab
  • Other tabs are open to BEM
  • The tab I'm working in SPONTANEOUSLY logs me off; even in the middle of typing, presumably because one of the other tabs has “timed out”.

This is, frankly, very annoying and counter-productive.

Is there a way to avoid this???

I'm really surprised at this [over]scrupulous treatment, given that I can log into something like RE/Nxt and stay on there for days.

FYI, I'm using Chrome.

Thanks for any help.

I have teachers regularly complaining about this when they're creating assignments. They will get logged out in the middle of typing assignment details even if they're actively typing. I created an “idea” for assignments to be auto saved in a “draft” mode as a suggestion for fixing the issue. Doesn't really help with the exact scenario you explained but just wanted you to know we feel your pain.

  • @john ronan I have the same problem. I recall in an early training that there was a setting to determine how long the auto-timeout /logout should be that could be set individually, but I have never been able to find it. Does anyone know if that is something that exists?

Back when users used a legacy login, platform managers could set the time out by roles. Ditto for customizing password parameter requirements by roles. I don't think it was ever individually set per user.

That is not the case today.

  • @Bryna Gleich,

    This is bad news.

But I think we've dodged the bigger question here: why, if I am FULLY ACTIVE in one tab, does the inactivity in another tab cause my ACTIVE tab to spontaneously log out?

    AND….how can we avoid this?

    Thanks.

    @john ronan I don't know why, but I'm not a developer either.

I have heard there are some internet browser extensions that enable people to “refresh all tabs” on command simultaneously, but I haven't tried them so I can't recommend one. And since it still requires a command (such as CLTR + R) , I'm not sure it that would be an acceptable work around. I'm also not sure how those extensions might interact with things that might be incomplete or unsaved at the time of refresh.

Definitely vote on the idea bank item. I'll reply back if I hear a solution or alternative work around.

I usually only have 1 instance of BBEM open at a time, but I have had the multi-tab timeout thing happen when I'm working with other things (not education) before, so I understand and empathize with the frustration.
