Canvas SIS Conversion | Grade passback

We are currently looking into purchasing a SIS Converison with the Canvas team to make our SIS - BlackBaud(BBK12) talk to Canvas & allow features like grade passback. We did talk to the Canvas team & they did not have much clarity as to how the end or finished product would look like. We now know that having the two systems talk to each other is a definite possibility, but we need to understand how a working model looks like. We as a team needed some clarifications so that we can convince our leadership to purchase this integration. Is there anyone who has purchased this integration setup & was able to make these two tools Canvas & BBK 12 talk, specifically around the gradebooks passing assignments/grades back and forth?

    @Michael OConnell We also have this question. We currently use Canvas, and are in the process of implementing Blackbaud. We really need to know what it looks like on either end. Should our teachers enter information on Blackbaud? Should they enter it in Canvas? I'm hoping to connect with someone who has gone through this and might be able to provide some guidance.

    I sent you a DM if you'd like to connect. We actually did the implementation and there were a few limitations that make this feature less amazing than we were hoping, but still worth having in my opinion.

    To directly answer your question, teachers should enter their assignment information on Canvas. Once the integration is set up, Canvas will give you a new button when creating an assignment to “Sync to Blackbaud”. This needs to be checked for grade pasback to work. This is neat because you can make other Canvas assignments that don't pass back, if you need. You also get a “Sync” button in Canvas, in the Grades section, that you can click and choose which assignments to push marks to manually.

    Something we didn't realize was that you need to create Canvas Assignment Groups that match Blackbaud Assignment Types. This was our first “oh… that's going to be trouble” moment with this, but something we can work around.

    Anyway, once you have your Canvas assignment made and at least one mark entered in Canvas (our second “oh…” moment), click “Sync” and within a minute or so you'll see your grades in Blackbaud. There is also a nightly sync scheduled so teachers don't have to click the button if they don't want to.
