Grade vs Class parents and Smart Groups and parent roster access

At our school we have this idea of a grade parent, but sometimes they want it to be a class parent. The solution we came up with many years ago was smart groups based on the grade of the related student. Then we make a parent a leader so they can use the mass mailing send communication feature. The problem is we have classes that span multiple grades. The grade parent can't see all the members of class since it crosses boundaries.

Does anyone have a better system for giving parents access to email address lists?

  • @Brian Hoyt We adopted the same approach you have, but we only wanted homeroom parents instead of grade parents. I had to create smart groups for parents of students in each specific homeroom class. Unless you mean graduating class rather than students enrolled in a specific class, this should work for you also. But, while I can create a smart group for parents of students enrolled in a specific class or (I think) for the students enrolled in a specific class, I can't combine those into one smart group. I'm not sure who your parents need to be able to send emails to.

  • @Shannon Krise Thanks, that is an alternative that I hadn't thought of before. I was filtering on grade level rather than course + section.
