Adding Additional Sections in Different Terms

I have a course that I need to offer twice. It should only be one-term long, and I need to offer one section in Fall and one section in Spring. I've added the course as one-term long in Departments and Courses. I've offered it. When I go to Manage classes, I seem to only have the option to add one section in the Fall. How do I create a second section but in the Spring, please?

You will need to offer it in the Spring as well. Once you do this, you will be able to create your Spring section.

Thank you. How do I offer in the Spring, as well? Does that mean change the length to 2. Or does that mean creating a second course with the same course code and name?

  • @Jennifer Miller when you are in Manage Classes change the term to Spring term from the current term you are in and then you can offer and build the section.

If your current course is length 4 and you want the new courses to only run half a year then you should create new course with length 2. Then when you go into offer course in first quarter and 3rd quarter (assuming that is how you have it set up) you will be able to offer the course each time. You don't need to set up two different courses. You just need to create a new course with length 2 and you will be able to offer it in the fall (Q1/S1) and Spring (Q3/S2)

Thank you. That did the trick!

    Thanks for this information.

How do you handle student requests for a 1 semester course offered both semesters? Do students request both courses?

    Thanks.

  • @Stacey Jansen - For one-semester courses that are offered two semesters, there is a setting on the course's Course request tab that asks: When multiple start terms exist, students can request:

    • “any term” or specific term
    • only “any term”
    • only specific term

the option you set will determine the choices a student may select.

  • @Scott Chrysler Thank you!

I'm assuming, then, if I select “any term” students will be placed in the course until it is full. Will students who do not “get” the course first semester be scheduled into second semester?

  • @Stacey Jansen - That is a good question. I never really checked as they all seemed to work out. I had no unfulfilled requests at the end of the scheduling process. I called that a good day and didn't ask any questions.

Your logic for how the system should work makes sense to me.

    I guess we'll find out!

    Thanks again for the help.
